2024 Toyota Grand Highlander
Got it at the end of May 2024 and at 4000 miles now. Traded 2015 Honda Pilot 4WD with almost 100K on it as a downpayment. Here are my two cents:
1. It is a big car, which is why I got it. Not because I have a large family, although occasionally I use the third row. However, it's mostly because I'm a big guy at 6'-3" and over 200 lb., so it's easy to get in and out. There is a lot of … storage space behind the second row. I was using the car for moving my daughter to a college dorm and we could fit a lot behind the 2nd row and even more with the roof rack and a basket I got on Amazon.
2. I was initially a bit concerned about a turbo with a 4-cyl when loaded with 4 people and dorm room cargo in the mountains. It's not an issue! However, I don't know about the reliability of such an engine after 150K or even less vs. the no-turbo V6 that my old Pilot had.
3. The comfort is great, even on long drives. The seats are supportive, and I have plenty of legroom for myself and for the people behind me. The same goes for the headroom and shoulder room. I got a dark gray (almost black) interior, which I think will last much longer than the white one I was initially offered.
4. The fuel consumption is around 24 mpg on average. One complaint I have is that the tank seems to be smaller than the 17.8 gallons listed in the specs because of the range I got after the fill. I should have over 400 miles on the full tank, but the reading says around 380.
5. The 18" wheels seem just about the right size. I think the higher trim 20" will not be as comfortable while driving. I haven't tested the AWD system yet, but I will soon, as winter is coming! I'm in Northern California, but I will use the car in the snow on multiple occasions since I like to go skiing. My daughter is in college in Reno, NV, so I have to drive over the mountains multiple times.
6. The car is loaded with options even though it's a "base" model. I really like blind-side monitoring, adaptive cruise control, a high-resolution rear camera, cross-traffic and pedestrian warnings, etc. Line centering is a bit weird, as it seems like the car is wrestling you! Having a lot of (7) USB charging points is great too. They are all USB-C, so be aware that you may need to get new cables.
7. The multimedia system is typical Toyota, with a 12-inch touch screen and wireless Android Auto and Apple Car Play. I'm an Android guy, and I don't know if it is an AA-only issue, but occasionally, the interface does not respond to touches. The only way to get it back to life is to reset it by pressing and holding the power/volume button for 7 seconds or more. At least there is a button! I like having real buttons and switches for AC controls and the media system. They are easy to reach and use without looking. But because of the occasional non-responsive system, I cut one star off the review.
8. I'm not a big fan of the start-stop system, as it seems to have a very small gain in fuel efficiency at the expense of more wear and tear on the engine and electrical system. You can disable it, but only until you stop driving. Then, when you start the car again, it's back. I heard there is a way to permanently disable it, but only dealers can do so. Yes, the battery seems to be designed for it, or so it says on the battery.
9. If you plan to use the backspace for carrying stuff a lot like I do, get rubber mats for the back of the seats of 3rd row, and even for the 2nd row. They are on Amazon for a reasonable price and attached with Velcro to the seat backs.
10. Small touches go a long way! There is a lot of storage space between the front seats—the box is huge, and in front, there is space for a wireless charger and phone storage next to it. There are plenty of cupholders, and there are retractable shades for the second-row windows. The AC vents are at the ceiling for the rear passenger vs. at the center console. Did I mention 7 USB charging points?
Overall - pretty happy so far. Let's see how it will do over the next many miles I'm planning on driving in this car.
