2007 Pontiac Solstice
Rare beauty that begs to be driven. Although this is a "base" model (meaning not a turbocharged GXP), it has every option available except automatic transmission. The five speed manual transmission adds to the fun factor, although the spacing between each gear is not consistent. The sound system has excellent fidelity although the display is washed out often with the top down on sunny … days. The engine is willing when the revs are paid attention to, and the exhaust note is pleasing when cruising. The steering is very responsive yet predictable, and the Cooper Sport tires that I put on are a good match. They have also quieted the road noise down from that was on the car when I purchased it. I wish the high-beam switch was a toggle rather than forward and back. The brakes are nicely progressive and up to the task, although they look a little lost in those big 18 inch wheels. The limited slip differential reminds you that it's there when turning tightly at low speed. When the top is down, the car is at its best. When it's up, it's not bad at all and it's weather tight. The HVAC is fine. The visibility of the gauges are frustrating because the lighting for them are not bright enough. The Solstice shares many computerized features seen on other GM cars like the automatic door locks, automatic headlights, variable with speed intermittent wipers, variable with speed audio volume, audible turn signal indication, etc. Most of these are well thought out and I don't mind them. Most importantly, the car has been trouble-free. I've put more miles on it in the year that I've owned it than I wanted to, it's just that compelling to drive. In that time I replaced the cam position actuators that cost me less than $50 for the pars and was absurdly simple to do. Oil changes is the only other thing I've done. I'm truly glad I purchased this car. It's fun and beautiful and not so common. I did buy a luggage rack for it which I used once before the Covid Pandemic. The rack is held with industrial quality suction cups so there is no drilling or clips to mar the paint. That kind of makes it just like a British Roadster!
