Best economy sedan for the long haul

2021 Mazda 6
I wanted a comfortable, reliable car that would be inexpensive to run, and not a penalty box to drive... and the (now discontinued) Mazda6 sedan delivers. I'm getting 35mpg plus on regular gas on the highway and 28-30mpg around town. Four people can travel comfortably, and the ride is compliant and relaxed, but with enough sport and zoom-zoom for enjoyable back-road forays. Our … Mazda6 is one level above the base, so for less than $28k we get a naturally aspirated and responsive engine that isn't constantly pulling timing under full acceleration, unlike the turbo version. Without the added complexity of the turbo and with a proven reliable engine with a long production history, we expect to get a decade or more of low-hassle performance. It's not an SUV or a jacked-up truck, so there's that too. Only negatives, the horrible infomatics (but Car Play works well) and sound quality sucks. A bit of wind and tire noise at high speeds. And that's it. Just a good car, nothing special here, but something that will last and continue to work from one of the industry's top-rated brands. "Nuff said"
