Almost Got Us Stranded

2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
We rented this Jeep to drive from Missouri to central Illinois. Each way is about 200 miles. At first I was excited to get this car, as it looked great and it’s a hybrid. The interior is roomy, but the materials, while nice to look at, didn’t feel premium. The first 10 local miles were good. The battery still had juice and provided smooth acceleration. But the battery ran out quickly on … the highway and the gas engine alone really struggled to pull the vehicle. But that’s not the worst part.
Half way to our destination, a serious problem developed. Every time I accelerated, there was a loud clunk under the front end. I could feel the impact in the car. It felt like the front transfer case kept trying to engage but couldn’t, or maybe the transmission was slamming into every gear. After a while, a warning message popped up on the dash “Service 4WD”. We managed to get to our destination, but the warning light stayed on the dash and the car drove like crap around town. There was no way I would drive my family 200 miles home in a car with a failing drivetrain. After making numerous calls to the rental company’s roadside assistance and jumping through their hoops, they finally agreed to swap it out with a much smaller car. But I felt relieved. At least we could get back safely without the risk of getting stranded in the middle of nowhere. It’s hard to believe a 2024 model with only 15k miles could develop such a major drivetrain issue. I would never buy this car personally, at any price.
