Bought into the hype and I regretted it

KVH , 02/12/2023
2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E
I should have done my research on EVs better because there was plenty I was not expecting with this vehicle and in the end I regretted my hasty decision to trade in my ICE car to pay down this one. Don't get me wrong, the features, the power, the fun factor are all there for this vehicle and if you have a set up that allows you to get cheap power for medium distances then this car might … be your thing. My issue is I do like to drive long distances and having to find a super charger that isn't a rip off and fast enough is not easy and adds almost and hour of travel time for every 270 miles or so. On top of that going up mountains drains the battery to a scary degree, and some mountain towns like Big Bear, CA do not have chargers which forced me to find a 220V NEMA plug to charge my car so I wouldn't get stranded. Furthermore in extreme heat like going to Las Vegas in Summer super chargers slow down dramatically in speed forcing me to spend nearly 1.5 hours to get a 50% charge. Finally in cold weather the heater drains the battery at an alarming rate and the notion that EV owners have to take extra steps to ensure a warm cabin. All these problems in my opinion gives most EV owners a high level of Cope and cognitive dissonance to justify them owning their cars. A plug in hybrid is far cheaper and is able to bypass all EV problems while still maintaining its environmentally friendly ascetic and had I known how those cars functioned, I would have gotten one of those and kept my ICE car with how much cheaper it would have been. If not for the fact my house gets free power, I would be paying upwards of over $600 a month on power with over $400 being attributed to charging the car. That is not cheaper than operating a Hemi engine Dodge Charger at all. If you have money to burn, a blind loyalty to EVs, and access to free or cheap power then I would say this car is perfect for you. Otherwise if you want to be environmentally friendly but not break the bank, forgo all EVs and just get a plug in hybrid.
