2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser
We bought our Cruiser Limited as part of an estate sale for $1,500. It had just 131,000 miles on it. It now has 165,000. The transmission control module has been replaced at a cost of about $500 and when I replaced the original wheels, it was discovered that both disc brake caliper mounts on the rear axle were shot. Replaced the entire rear axle assembly and rear brakes for about $1,000. … The A/C compressor stopped recycling, so it will have to go to the shop for that. I have spent a lot of money on a 21-year-old car, but I really do like it and all other mechanicals are fine. The car had been hit on the left side, so that door is not from a Limited. When they replaced it, they put manual (toggle control) mirrors on it which I replaced. We can't seem to get a remote to program, but are content to unlock the passenger door and use the electric lock function to open the doors. The car's only problem since we purchased it is a sticky ignition that sometimes locks up.The car is comfortable and performs reasonably well with the 4OD transmission. Fuel mileage has been around 22 combined and 26 highway. There is a ton of cargo space and the interior configurations are amazing. It's great around town and great on the highway, cruising nicely at 70-75. It's tight and there is virtually no wind noise. We bought it as a second car..It was Motor Trend's Car of the Year in 2001 and I can understand why. Update 4-5-25: We sold the car about a year and a half ago..Fun to drive, but starting to nickel and dime us. We got $1,500 for it. Mileage was around 180,000. No major engine problems.
