Wrong Car For Some

Browneye, 03/27/2023
2013 Cadillac XTS
I have been shopping for a used Cadillac for the past year - finally found a good deal on a 2013 XTS, one owner, 59K miles, Premium model. It's very nice and have spent a couple of weeks fixing little things and fine detailing - it appears nearly as new now. Everything works. There are complaints about the MagneRide suspension - yes, the ride is fantastic. Yes the shocks and struts … will wear out at 50 to 70K miles. Either buy the parts yourself and have an independent garage replace them, or shell out big money to the 'stealership' (dealer). They charge a LOT. All cars wear out their suspension - the caddy rides fantastic when it's working. Some cars can get by with worn out shocks for a LONG time. The auto-adjustable ride height on the rear is composed of air ride springs and an air pump. If the bags wear out they need to be replaced - oem's are about $100 each. Same deal as the shocks and struts. If the bags leak and the pump runs incessantly it will burn it out too - they're about $300 for the part. Any failure warrants immediate attention - you don't just drive it broken and hope it will get better, it won't. The CUE system was new for GM in 2013. The screen is a laminated multi-layer display to show the screen icons as well as touch control. The gel adhesive that laminates them deteriorates over time and fails - no touch control, appears as cracked. Aftermarket offers replacements from $89. Either pony up big dollars at the stealership, or order a screen and replace it yourself, or have a contractor do it. It's not an expensive deal and the aftermarket are excellent quality. Don't replace it with an OEM screen - that's just silly. The car is full of electrical and electronic gadgets so it heavily taxes the battery. If the battery gets weak the CUE system will fail to boot and either miss icon values in the dash, or just go blank. Just get a new battery - a good quality one is about $140. Plan to do this every couple of years. These cars are complicated as well - the service manual is over six thousand pages. You either get good at fixing things yourself, have a good independent shop at hand, or fork out big bucks at the dealer - and sometimes they're just not very good with technical stuff. So be forewarned and forearmed. It's no worse than a Mercedes Benz - I've had a handful of those as well and they're no picnic. Same for BMW or Porsche. Bring yer $$$ Otherwise the car is very roomy and comfortable, ride quality is outstanding, it gets decent mileage for a 2-ton car, and has a five-body trunk - yeah it's huge. Don't buy the car if you really want a Corolla or a Camry - this isn't it. It's still a lot cheaper to maintain than any Euro-car. PERIOD.
