Great Audi Design, Quality & Poor Software Support
pharding, 07/05/2023
2023 Audi Q4 e-tron Premium Plus 4dr SUV AWD w/50 (electric DD)
I am very pleased with it. Excellent Audi Quality and 270 mile real world range in economy drive mode and prudent driving. Exterior design is quite beautiful with elegant proportions. Interior is well done with slightly frugal finishes. Interior cabin is spacious. Audi MMI infotainment system is excellent. Not cutting edge but is excellent none the less. Works well with Apple CarPlay. … Black Optic package is quite beautiful. Overall I am extremely happy with it.
Update after 20 months of ownership. 7.12.24. I had serious issues in one instance of extreme cold. Audi claims to have fixed it with a software update in a recall but we have not extreme cold in Chicago since then. The MMI worked well until I decided not to pay Audi $500 a year for the software subscription with internet access. At that point I went with Apple CarPlay. Apple CarPlay which does not load quickly. It loads slowly and wastes my time. Audi’s software expertise and software support, like that of VWAG, is poor. Problems take forever to get solved because of poor software expertise and Audi, like VWAG, grossly underfunds software maintenance, upgrades to fix bugs, and national software support. When you call in for national customer service, the Audi knowledge base is poor and hit or miss. In theory the Q4 has the capability for over the air software upgrades, but that is not workable. The only way to get software fixes is to take the car to the dealership and let them to do it there which takes a day or two.
From a design perspective and mechanically I like the Q4 a lot. However Audi is bumbling with software and doesn’t understand the importance of software support after you buy the car.
Update on 7.15.25. Audi finally got the problems resolved with Apple CarPlay sometime in May 2025. I called in approximately 20 times working with Audi USA Tech Support. I am technically savy. By and large 80 percent of Audi USA technical support staff were nice but inept. Audi provided poor support and guidance to them to establish a checklist of how to deal with this common resting technical problem. I thought the issue was fixed, then Microsoft to an upgrade to the iPhone operating system. It took Audi 3 months for inept VW German software engineers to very slowly develop a software fix.
There was a recall because the software did not consistently indicate that the car was in reverse gear. My wife went to pull forward in the Q4 and the car went backwards into a post doing about $2,000 damage to the rear bumper. We are attempting to get Audi to fix it because it is known software issue that caused the problem. Audi is giving pushback and so far won’t fix the bumper.
I remain pleased with the car design, operation, range, and EV cars. Audi is grossly indifferent to people that spent 70k and trusted them. Their software expertise is terrible. Their desire to fix software issues is terrible. Audi does not survey their customers to measure client satisfaction and client input with their expensive cars. I received 1 survey in 2 1/2 years of ownership. BMW does approximately 8 on past BMW cars that we bought. Audi’s customer service and understanding of its customers is appalling compared to BMW. We just replaced my wife’s 12 year old BMW X3. We did not consider Audi because Audi as a company has terrible customer service and just doesn’t care about its customers and is lethargic about solving issues and their software engineers are incredibly inept and unprofessional. So we bought a 2025 BMW X3 because BMW is much better, more reliable car company that solves problems, including software problems quickly.
My 2023 Audi Q4 eTron is fine, except for software issues and Audi itself. I like the car a lot. However I have contempt for Audi as a car company because they are unbelievably cheap and inept in solving problems.
