Used 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Consumer Reviews
Over 150k and going strong
Reliable SUV, driven hard for 150k miles. Great in snow, mud and rough roads. 22 mpg at 75 mph. Low range has come in handy several times. Some maintenance issues with electronics, suspension and engine mounts.
Poor Drive
I was expecting a lot more from a Mercedes. This has to be one of the poorest performing cars in its class. The handling is poor and vague, the accelerator is vague, and the brakes are vague! This car has vague written all over it. What is it really for? Mercedes made a stab at the SUV market and, in my opinion, failed miserably. The one thing that they do well with this vehicle is having Mercedez Benz luxury. It's great to be driven in thiscar but it's horrible when it comes to driving it. It gives me no confidence,no power, and no feel.

Great SUV
I bought my '98 ML320 in July 2000 for $26,000, and since then I've had nothing short of an outstanding vehicle. I've had no problems at all with it. The engine is very reponsive and powerful, and the 5-speed driver- adaptive automatic transmission shifts beautifully. The Starmark service is great. There've been no problems with any electrical systems or switches, transmission, engine, or controls like others have claimed. It'll treat you good if you do the same. Take care of it and it'll last you a long time.
Love It or Sell It
A few minor annoying problems for first 3 yrs (23000 miles)-- glove box, front seat adjustment handle, etc. Fuel pump failed in 3rd year. Faulty work on fuel pump resulted in a second replacement in the 4th year (28000 miles). The 4 year warranty is definitely valuable.
Good overall, but expect a bouncy ride
Traveling in my ML 320 at 65 mph over a rough stretch of freeway is a very bumpy experience. The bumpy ride makes the entire back end of my ML 320 rattle and shake. This effect is unnerving at times. On smooth road surfaces, my ML 320 is a very nice riding SUV. Would I buy another ML 320? Probably not.
