Koons Westminster Toyota
Dealership Sales Review
In July 2008 Koons Toyota Westminster offered $15,000 for my 2004 Prius, with a broken MFD. Car had 65,000 miles. The trade-in after the MFD was repaired would be $16,500- very close to the Edmunds TMV- trade in price listing of the value of this car at the time. In June 2009, Koon Toyota Westminster offered $7,000 trade-in for the same car, now with 77,000 miles. Edmunds lists the TMV trade in price as $12,900. Salesperson now says that "Edmunds prices are not accurate, and Kelley Blue Book shows $9,300 for this car." OK, Kelley Blue Book is essentially owned and supported by dealers, so why did they not offer $9,300? No real answer, many dealers now use the "Black Book" which is of course all set up for dealers to make a $5,000 profit on every traded in car. Saw a similar car offered for sale at another dealer for $13,989, a 2005 Prius with 93,400 miles. So the dealers believe in the Edmunds pricing when they are selling a car, but not when they are taking a trade in- what a biased system. So now I'm thinking that the retained value of these Toyota's is not so good if the dealers won't offer a trade in price within three thousand dollars of their sale price for the same car.
