BMW X5 eDrive (hybrid) unreliable

Disappointed BMW Owner, 11/23/2024
2017 BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
I ordered this vehicle brand new from the factory and was excited to have a hybrid that was fun to drive. Even though I had it regularly serviced at the dealership and used costly top grade gasoline, the X5 often needed extra repairs which were costly. At 45,000 miles, it stopped charging and needed a new hybrid battery which was very expensive, but not covered under the warranty because … the original warranty had just expired. Because I wanted to keep the car, we bit the bullet and paid for the battery. Then it needed new tires, and we paid $1,200 for all weather tires. At 56,000 miles an engine malfunction light came on. The advice on the screen mentioned calling the service technician and that the engine might not have full power while driving. We pulled over and had the car towed to a dealership. The dealership let me know the hybrid transmission had an error code and that BMW North America cannot authorize their dealerships to work on hybrid transmissions. Seriously? They will sell me a new transmission for $17,000, plus $4,000 labor to install in. Since the fly wheel also suffered damage, I need a new one of those, too. But I told them to keep their quote because I am not spending $21,000 to repair a car that used to be worth $17,000 BEFORE the transmission stopped working. I found a used BMW hybrid transmission that no one will install, except the dealership. So if I go that route, I will only be out $11,000. BUT then I am gambling on whether or not that transmission will last....so currently trying to sell the X5 without a working transmission. VERY disappointed in BMW. I feel like there should hav been a recall on tehse transmissions, as it is a common occurrence in this year and model.
