  • 1998 Chevy Prizm front wheel bearing

    Written by: keithh1 on Apr 17, 2012 3:22:32 PM

The driver's side front tire will wobble back and forth when the car is jacked up off the ground. To me, this means a bad wheel bearing. The parts store wants to sell me the entire front spindle and bearing kit. The bearing is not pressed on yet though. I haven't got the car up on jackstands yet to see how hard this will be. Anybody done this job? Keith

Yes, it has timing chain instead. They do not require replacement as far as I know, reading Haynes manual.Iridium spark plugs for your application can be bought from amazon or rockauto.com for cheaper than some other places. check your local auto parts stores too.But do get NGK or Denso (both made in Japan, OEM plugs) brand only, not any other brand. It does not have to be iridium, if it is iridium you ... • Broken inside door handle

My son broke the driver's inside door handle on my Prizm. Apparently this is a very common occurrence so I thought I'd post my fix. What happens is the weak plastic posts that the pull handle is attached to, and pivots on, snap. So I drilled out what was left of the posts, top and bottom of the body that holds the pull handle, and replaced the two posts with a ... Read More

  • Radio and speaker replacement in 1998 Prizm

    Written by: keithh1 on Jun 12, 2009 5:42:15 AM

The radio is shot in my 98 Prizm. If you leave it ON when you turn the car off, the next time you start it up the radio squeals loudly and doesn't play. If you turn it off before turning the car off, it works when you start up again, but the front speakers crackle and pop. No snap though, or I could sell it as breakfast cereal. Hmmm. Anyway, a ... 1998 Chevy Prizm, same thing only more so. No oil in the water, no smoke that I've noticed (i.e., idling), no puddles under the car. Hmmm. Keith

  • intermitent starting problems

Written by: meeko on May 10, 2009 9:50:52 AM

I have a 1998 Chevy prizm. When the weather was cool sometimes it wouldn't start. I would turn the key and the lights on the dash would go on but it didn't turn over or make a sound. After a few tries it would turn over. Now that the weather has warmed it starts every time. I replaced my battery about 1 month ago.

However older Prizms/Corollas are more reliable than newer ones My experience has shown that my 89 and 99 are both super reliable. My relative's 04 and co-workers' 05 and 07 have been perfect, and Consumer Reports agree that all Corollas are extremely reliable. Go with any Corolla/Prizm that has been well-maintained, and it will be fine.

There are 3 speed a/t, and 3 speed+O/D a/t for this car.And both transmissions (A131L and A245E) use a lock-up torque converter. I would suggest you get a 2000 or newer Prizm with 1.8 lt engine and 4 speed auto or manual transmission. Because these have VVT-i engines which save gas. However older Prizms/Corollas are more reliable than newer ones. If I were you I would find a nice 1995-1996-1997 model ... Read More

I'm looking to buy a 1998 Chevy Prizm with an auto trans. I thought this was a 4spd, but it appears to be a 3spd and doesn't appear to have a locking torque converter. Is this correct? Thanks. Keith

  • Are all Prizm's the same?

A strange thing happened to me the other day... I was sitting in my car eating lunch @ a fast-food restaurant... a lady parked right next to me who had a car just like mine... ( 1998-2000 Chevy prizm ). I kept looking at her car... I was very surprised to see she had some of the same wear and tear as I did... some examples I noted; my inside drivers ... Read More

alpha01, I'm not sure what Chevy does now, but they used to put Firestones (I'm sure the cheapest ones) on Prizms in 1998. I had to change them at about 17K mi. The protector was still pretty good, but the excessive shaking and poor handling was killing me. After about 5 balances I decided to trade them in for $10 each.
