I have a 2004 Buick Rainier with 56500 on the dash, I bought it 6 months ago with 50000. I have the SAME issue as pretty much everyone else on here, I took it to the dealership where I got it from and Turns out, the Transfer case was binding, fortunately I bought a warranty with it, So all i had to pay was my 100$ deductible. They said that they ... Read More
I have a 2004 Rainier and it occasionally shudders quite badly when turning sharply. I have no idea what causes it, but I have heard it can be related to incorrect tire pressures. Mine seems to happen at low speeds, but maybe that's because no-one makes really sharp turns at higher speeds. Andy
I have a 2004 Rainier and am having problems with the differentials "locking" when turning at low speeds. Is there a way to figure out which one is the problem? I have changed the center diff fluild twice in about a month and it is no better. I also had the rear diff fluid changed. I was amazed when I went to the Buick dealership that they really did not have ... Read More
I have a 2004 Rainier. You would think they would've solved a few of those issues by the next year, but that's a big NO. I will give them credit in that some of the problems don't appear right away. The biggest pet peeve is their lack to acknowledge the problems. We are all having these problems and spent ALOT of money for these vehicles. They could care less. Every time ... Read More
Hello all, Since a few days ago when we start the 2004 Buick Rainier we get this "vacuum cleaner engine" noise that goes off after 10 seconds or so. we noticed it was mainly when first starting it or after a few hours of the suv sitting there. There is no engine light on at all and everything runs, or at least seems to run just fine. Now this sound is ... Read More
I have the same problem on my 2004 Rainier. Went to Buick Rainier Electrical Problems and there were no comments when I searched.
Hello, I have a 2004 Buick Rainier CXL Sometimes when I turn my key to start my car it gives a little clicking noise and won't turn over. Sometimes it will start on the 2nd time I turn my key and then other times it may take 10 times before it will start. The battery is new; I'm not sure if there's a loose connection somewhere, if it's the ignition or ... Read More
I would love to join you in that fight. I belive that they do know about this/these problems and do not want to admit it or tell anyone because they know that they'ed have to replace /or fix these problems or do a massive recall. I like my Rainier but I can't afford the dealers cost to fix it. Talk to me........ Steve
I would say more then likely---because turning on the ignition does not activate the lights--you can turn them on even with the ignition off so I would think one of the wires is crossed somewhere---see if you can find a schematic to trace the connections or get it down to someone who knows a lot about the electrical system of your car ken z
Probably different. You did mean that the ignition switch is physically stuck in the ON position?
My son changed the tail light asembly on a 2004 Buick Rainier and in doing so changed some ends on his wires to the light assembly and did some soldering. Now the ignition switch will not shut off. Is this related or something diffenent.
In the beginning this was a great vehicle. I have the kick at stops, much like everyone else. Then came the front end troubles. After sinking a ton into fixing the right axle now I have to fix the left one. As I save to do so, then the instrument panel dies. This is the last straw. I've just been laid off and this is not the time of year to ... Read More
I was reading on here quite a bit and someone had mentioned to make sure the tire pressure stayed up where it should be. Seemed a little ridiculous. However, we did it and a lot of the noises have stopped or happen a lot less frequently. The problem you are having with the idle issue is exactly what we are experiencing. It's the weirdest thing. I hope it's just a nuisance ... Read More

I had a similar problem but the clunk vibration was eventually occured both when tturning sharp left or right. It felt like it was binding up. I finally took it in and it was the transfer case, middle box, that went bad. It locks into four wheel drive all tme. You only notice it when turning. Cost was 2300.00. It definetly solved the problem.
My 2004 Rainier has 55k and has been a good vehicle. The problem is a grinding/clunking noise from the front end and vibration in the steering wheel when turning left. It does not make the noise until the vehicle has been driven for about 5 minutes. It has been doing this for the last year and nobody has been able to fix it. Hi a_mac, I own a 2004 Rainier myself and live in Michigan as well!! Worst place to not have your AWD. You'll know when your AWD is responding because your steering will feel "tighter", and the Rainier feels likes it's "stiff". I just got mine back from the shop b/c it needed the TCCM replaced (440.00 repair) Mine wasn't reading correctly so there for it was stuck in AWD. If I ... Read More

Hi, I have a 2004 Rainier CXL with AWD. How can I tell if the AWD is working or not? Up here in Michigan I slide all over the road and never seem to hear or feel the front wheels engage. And I do not get any activation lights coming on either. Maybe it is just not working. Thanks Andy
I have a 2004 Buick Rainier that has numerous problems. I have read lots of posts about the electrical problems with speed odometer, mine is not working at all!! Has anyone experienced a thud type of noise around 25 MPH on the 2004 Buick Rainier AWD and then around 30-35 MPH a studdering motion occurs. The tires are not worn and this does not sound like it would be the problem. Has anyone else ... Read More
I am having the exact same problem with my 2004 buick rainier at approximately 88,000 miles.. I took it to the dealer and they said the switch to unlock the vents is located under the steering wheel. Hey dmrjlr: You are not alone here. This is one of the defects of this vehicle. The gauge control panel is defective and needs to be replaced. The "Air shock" noise you are hearing is not air shocks but your rear stabilizing system which is also defective. Have your tire pressure checked. That is one of the things that could correct that problem. There are issues with the AWD (all wheel ... Read More
I too started having problems with first my Speedometer, then my oil gauge, next my Tach, then Engine temp, next gas gauge now my air shocks are lowering when the truck is at rest? if the blower motor is not making any sound at any speed it sure sounds like the blower motor is shot or it could possibly be a fuse---first check for the fuse if you don't have your manual to tell you where the fuse is--the listing is on the inside of the fuse box cover under the hood---if the fuse is good my suggestion is for you to go to your ... The blower doesn't make any noise when I turn on the air. Would that be the blower motor? I just don't know what it looks like or where I'm supposed to be looking. We just had one of the actuators replaced 5 months ago at a cost of $600 at the dealer. I am not looking to have to go back there and spend another large amount.
I cannot believe that there is no recall on the speedometers. I understand that they don't make them anymore, but the ratio of bad speedos to the number of Rainiers on the road has to be high. Mine started acting up a few months ago, but I attributed it to a bad speed sensor and was going to change a wheel bearing until I researched it tonight. I was looking up ... Read More
when you turn the fan on if you hear the motor running the blower motor is good---if the motor only runs on 1 speed (usually high) you need a blower motor resistor---but if the motor is running and nothing is coming out of the vents it is more then likely due to a bad valve directing the flow of air---I believe on your car there are at least 3 of these ... My 2004 Buick Rainier is stuck in AWD. Buick garage diagnosed problem three months ago as a faulty transfer case encoder motor. I replaced the motor and two days later it was stuck again. I have a 2004 Buick Rainier that I fried the battery on. I bought a new battery and the car now starts but all I have are my headlights. Every light or power controlled device inside or out now does not work. Is there a main fuse that I blew or do I have to check all 110 fuses? -Jason
I have owned many vehicles over the last 30 years and the worst was a 2004 Buick Rainier purchased last year with 24,000 miles. I have an 05 one and just found out about the same problem. The speedometer doesn't pass 30 mph and the needle drops way below 0 when I drive slow or the car is stopped. I'm hoping it might be a bad sensor (yeah right ...........) Were you able to get any other diagnosis of your problem ??
It seem to me that all Rainiers have the same problem. I said this becaused I bought one from 2005 and I just came from the dealer with the same problem and they want to charge me almost $ 600 to fix it. I guest Biuck knows about the problem and not want to do anything about it. I will be sending a very angry letter to Buick.
my speed odometer will register the wrong speed I am traveling, sometimes it will freeze and I lightly tape on the dashboard, sometimes this helps and sometimes not. does anyone know where the oil filter is located in a 2004 buick rainier?
My 2006 does the same thing as did my 2003 Trailblazer. In reading the owners manual it's working as designed. The story I read mentioned other vehicles and recalls in addition to the tail light recall for the 2002-2004 Chev TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Olds Bravada, & Buick Rainier. 2003 Chevy Malibu, Olds Alero and Pontiac Grand Am have the sticking accelerator problem.
Read GM is supposedly pulling out all the stops on content and features for the Rainier. Maybe all those decontented things will find their way to the Buick.
So you reckon they will come out with a "T-Type" "Grand National" or "Gran Sport" version? Supercharge a 5.3 - that would be fun.
