Problems with the odometer and gearshift light level? The problem is likely limited to four resistors on the circuit board inside the panel. There is at least one really great Youtube video showing how to get the dash apart and requires only a Phillips screwdriver. My daughters 98 Century had the same exact over heating problem and it was not the temp sensor, the engine simply needed to be flushed. We also found out that the 98 Buick Centrury DOES NOT like stuff like Bars Leak & Stop Leak it will plug the cooling system as quick as a flash. Well today, Feb 28, 2010, I replaced the Headlight switch. This DID NOT fix the problem. But the black connector plug that plugs into the headlight switch is burnt and melted. Looks like the Black with white stripe wire and the brown wire got hot and melted the plastic. it the blower motor. I went a year spraying wd-40 into bottom of the blower motor. but then replaced with a used blower motor from salvage yard for 25 bucks. I am start to think Buicks don't like cold weather. good luck.

Joe, ( or anyone else) did you fix the problem with your odometer light not working. I am having the same problem. All other lights work except odometer & gear selector light. Turning the headlight switch dims lights but still doesn't bring the odometer light back on.

License Plate Lamp Replacement
We have a 1998 Buick Century Limited. The other day, I noticed that one of the license plate lamps is burned out. Is it possible to replace the burned out lamp without removing the entire rear taillamp assembly??

Boris: I can't find this switch. Is it on the instrument cluster module, part of the headlamp switch or a separate unit behind the dash somewhere? Any elaboration is appreciated. Thanks, Joe

Yes. I have this problem been fixed. I changed the highlamp switch which is the one to control the light from min. to max. and is located on the driver side and beside the odometer. In my case, the digital odometer background light and the shift lights were not working.

I have This Exact problem on my 2000 Century. All dash lights are OK except the odometer/gear select indicator is invisible. I tried to follow the discussion thread and see no help. Please, has anyone had this problem and knows the fix?

You could have thermostat failure. Generally a simple, low cost fix.

The headlights need to come from Regal/Buick models. You can use any headlights on that car from the years 1997-2005, as well as parts. I just bought one for my 97 Century for the driver's side from Ebay. Depending on where you live, you may be able to find a salvage yard that you can get parts from.

1998 Buick Century Digital odometer
My digital odometer in the dash area will not light up anymore, i can't see it nor can I see the gear selection I am in. Does anyone know if it is a LED light that went out or if it is something that can be replaced? All other warning lights and instrument lights work.

The headlights need to come from other Century/Regal models. I do not believe the LeSabre headlight would work. The good news is the Century/Regal headlights are easy to install and often readily available at reasonable prices on eBay.
