PARIS — The world premiere of a new Lexus concept car, rumored to be a compact crossover built on the Toyota RAV4 platform, has been set for the 2012 Paris Auto Show.

Images and information about the Lexus concept will be released ahead of the show on September 17.

A new Lexus compact crossover could slot in below the Lexus RX 350 and appeal to entry-level luxury buyers. The 2013 Lexus RX 350 starts at $40,205, including an $895 destination charge. A future Lexus compact crossover presumably would offer a lower price tag and better fuel economy than the current Lexus RX 350. The EPA says the 2013 RX 350 returns 18 mpg in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway.

A Lexus compact crossover would target the BMW X1 and Acura RDX. The 2013 BMW X1 sDrive28i starts at $31,545, including an $895 destination charge. The 2013 Acura RDX starts at $35,215, including an $895 destination charge.

The 2013 Acura RDX returns 20 mpg in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The 2013 BMW Z1 sDrive28i returns 24 mpg in city driving and 34 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Lexus said it will also display the new Lexus LS 600h F Sport at the Paris auto show.

Edmunds say: An excellent case could be made for a Lexus compact crossover, especially when gas prices are unlikely to decrease anytime soon.
