NEW YORK — The redesigned 2013 Lexus ES family will add a hybrid edition for the first time. Both the 2013 ES 350 and 2013 ES 300h sedans are being introduced this week at the 2012 New York Auto Show.
The new ES 300h gets a gasoline/electric powertrain similar to that used in the midsize Toyota Camry Hybrid, with an electric motor paired with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The ES 300h hybrid is expected to achieve an EPA combined fuel economy rating of 40 mpg, Lexus said.
The ES 350 gets a 3.5-liter V6 and six-speed automatic transmission. Lexus did not provide power or fuel economy figures.
The exterior design of the new ES is a tad more daring than on previous generations, with a new face that draws styling inspiration from the recently redesigned GS sedan.
The 2013 ES is 1 inch longer than its predecessor, with its wheelbase stretched 1.8 inches. The result is a bit more cabin space, especially in the rear where occupants receive more leg- and knee room.
The car rides on 215/55R17 low-rolling-resistance tires and 17-inch alloy wheels, with new 18-inch high-gloss alloy wheels and larger tires available as an option.
Lexus said revised suspension geometry, better shock damping, a lower steering ratio and a stiffer body contribute to improvements in ride and handling on the 2013 ES.
In addition to 10 standard airbags, the new ES can be ordered with a blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert, lane departure alert and a radar-based pre-collision system.
The cabin of the 2013 ES features new seats that can be upholstered in NuLux or leather. Other standard equipment includes an LED analog clock and a premium audio system with eight speakers, CD player, USB/iPod connectivity, Bluetooth and a SiriusXM receiver.
Among the available options are the Lexus Enform infotainment system, Lexus Safety Connect communications system, a hard drive navigation system with integrated back-up camera and a 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system.
Edmunds.com says: The new ES may look ever so slightly sportier this fall, but all the usual bells and whistles are still there.
