FRANKFURT, Germany — The Volvo Concept C is being teased in a YouTube video ahead of its debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

"I can assure you that the vanilla days are over," said Thomas Ingenlath, who heads Volvo Group design.

The fleeting images in the video show a significant departure from traditional Volvo design, including a bolder grille and LED light clusters. The letter "C" can be seen on the concept.

"When I joined Volvo a year ago, some people described Volvo's design as vanilla," said Ingenlath. "In other words, nice, but not iconic or cutting edge."

The video ends with the date August 29, which suggests that more details about the concept are set for a release at that point.

"An imminent transformation is underway," says the text accompanying the video.

Ingenlath, a former head of Skoda design, led several design programs at Volkswagen, including the one for the Concept BlueSport roadster that debuted at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Edmunds says: As always, the trick will be to lure new buyers without alienating those who simply prefer classic vanilla.
