The GLA45 AMG joins an impressive stable that includes the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, GL63 AMG and G63 AMG.
Pricing on the new compact SUV will be announced closer to launch.
The production version is equipped with a 355-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine linked to a seven-speed sports transmission. The GLA45 AMG sprints from zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph.
The transmission has three modes: a manual mode, sport mode and a "C" mode, which is short for "Controlled Efficiency." This mode features a fuel-saving ECO start/stop function. Fuel economy estimates on the new SUV were not released.
An AMG Performance exhaust system is optional and features a distinctive engine sound.
The GLA45 AMG comes with standard four-wheel drive and a sport suspension.
Options include an aerodynamics package that bundles a large front splitter and rear spoiler; carbon-fiber exterior mirror housings; an exterior carbon-fiber package; a Night package with black and silver trim and red-painted brake calipers with black AMG lettering.
The cabin is equipped with sport seats with red contrast stitching and red seatbelts.
The interior can be upgraded with a performance steering wheel, carbon-fiber trim and leather upholstery.
A special 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG Edition 1 gets upgraded exterior and interior touches. They include silver gray/red AMG racing stripes on the vehicle sides, red exterior highlights and multi-spoke AMG alloy wheels. The cabin gets trim that matches the AMG racing stripes, along with an Edition 1 badge and AMG emblem.
