Re: 2005 Acura RL Bumper Peeling from exhaust [skbelsky]
Written by: cstiles on May 10, 2008 4:01:12 PM
I do not have any paint peeling, but the tailpipe extensions were redesigned in 2006 and our dealer replaced them with the new ones on our 2005 RL at no charge approximately 2 years ago. The new extensions go out a little bit further, and do not cause the same soot buildup that we originally experienced on our white RL. If I were you, I would go back to your dealer ... Read More

2005 Acura RL Bumper Peeling from exhaust
Written by: skbelsky on Apr 30, 2008 8:59:03 AM
I have a 2005 Acura RL. I have always had an accumulation of soot around both exhaust pipes. Recently, the paint on the bumper started to peel around one of the pipes. My dealership insists this was the result of flex (compromising the bumper). I insist that it was from the soot, excess heat, or some ancillary problem related to the exhaust pipes (it is just too coincidental that the paint ... Read More

I had the same problem when I turned off the lights / engine, and the trunk will popped open. That causes dead batteries a few times. I believe that it was a design oversight.

HIgh mileage Acura RL: what repairs/maintenance have you done so far?
Written by: hewittp on Dec 2, 2009 6:48:28 AM
I'm still contemplating of getting a used Acura RL (2005/2006). For those of you with high mileage (60K and above), what repairs/maintenance have you done so far? I'm a bit worried of the long term reliability of the 2005/2006 Acura RL. Please respond. We need to make this forum active :) Thanks.

Totally different type of cars, ride, handling, mileage, etc. RL is a luxury car and the Accord is sportier. The RL will definitely cost more in repairs as I have had experience with both. My 2002 RL was purchased off lease and I secured the Acura Care Warranty prior to the expiration of the factory warranty. Now the warranty has expired my repairs costs are starting to add up. The powertrain warranty is for 6 years and 70,000 miles so it still is in effect. I say buy the used Acura and save the $9,000 bucks for the repairs that likely will never come.

I own a 2006 Acura RL. I was planning to buy an MDX but ended up getting an RL. I am very happy about my purchase. Still, I strongly recommend skipping the 2005 RLs. It was a revolutionry car back then with a lot of new features and gadgets. There were a lot of initial problems with electronics and computer programming during the first production year. Best year for used 2005+ Acura RL
Written by: nowakj66 on Oct 1, 2008 5:57:11 PM
I am getting semi serious about a used Acura RL in the 2005 - 2008 range. 2005s certified are now being priced mid to high 20s which is attractive. There seem to be a lot coming off lease now. I do not see as many 2006, 2007 or 2008s. Any sense which is the best year? Will the bulk of used 2006s be available in a year? And used 2007s are ... Read More

Bartalk, Long time since I saw your posts in here...Good to see you again. Automotive News "Tier 1" Does that mean the RL will have finally "arrived"? Edmunds has had the RL in their Luxury Performance Sedans group since 2005 competing with BMW 5 series, Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, Cadillac STS, etc. Looking forward to see what Acura does with the TL next model year. :) We've seen the 2009 RL. jjacura - Yes, these are the Ultra Performance Michelins, not the OEM's. Much quieter, stick like glue regardless of road surface, weather, etc. I paid about $238 per tire on special order from Costco, and will replace with the same when necessary. I'm looking to replace the 2005 with a 2009 model, but, in the interest of fairness to all, I'll still have to drive the competition's boxes again. Regardless of ... Read More

Speaking as someone who "almost" replaced a long long lineup of German cars with an Infiniti, perhaps it is time to seriously consider the Japanese cars. Frankly, I did think Infiniti made a good run at "German-ness" and although I have driven Lexi's over the years, I had not given the current gen a serious look-see. The reason (before the 2005 Infiniti M35X near miss)? I thought the Lexus cars were ... Read More

Ford's and GM's market cap is explained by their battered stock price. They are not #12 and #15 in relative size, vs. Honda's #2. GM is the 3rd largest corporation in the world, and Ford is #4, based on revenues. They dwarf Honda in terms of revenues and units (although they may not be making money on those units). Honda is the #1 manufacturer of motorcycles in the world, and sells ... Read More

Ummm, what the heck does a depreciation scale have to do with anything? The only value that means anything is the residual percentage of MSRP of any given car after a certain number of years and miles. Looking at this from a different perspective; I leased a 2002 530i in April of 2002 with an MSRP of almost exactly $48,000. Even though I negotiated a ~$42,000 deal (via the ED program), ... Depreciation is based upon MSRP not on "the deal". As for an American car that matches the RL, consider the following: Year -- Car --------------------------- MSRP ---------- Edmunds TMV ------- Retained Value 2005 -- Acura RL ------------------ $49,100 ------- $35,076 - $37,367 ------- 71.4% - 76.1% 2005 -- Chrysler 300C AWD -- $34,455 ------- $25,797 - $27,839 ------- 74.9% - 80.8% The two TMV values shown are Dealer Trade-In and Private ... RL was down almost 28% from 2000. 2002: TL was down 12% from 2001,but is Acura's best-selling vehicle (60,764 sold). I purchased an 06 RL in late December 2005. Loved the car for the first 2900 miles. Then it started to drag. Ran sluggish. Sounded "throaty". Check engine light came on, check emissions light, and check sh-awd light. Take it in, am told they cleared the codes, and since they didn't come back on, my car is fine. They determined that the codes were "thrown" because the car thought the engine ... Read More

This is definitely surprising and not like my experience in northern nj. First, I don't think Acura, as a brand, stands for this. Acura doesn't seem to look after its customers or supervise the dealers very closely. Ours is pleasant but performs extra services without consent, and gets offended when payment is refused. I'm very happy with my Acura, but I won’t buy another because of the regrettable dealer experience.

That is so surprising, for two reasons. First, at many dealerships, service and repair is a great profit center. Second, if they provide good service to someone who didn't buy there, it encourages them to buy there the next time. That's how my dealership got me as a loyal customer. I bought my first Acura elsewhere because I got a good deal, but I took it to this dealership for service ... Read More

Ignition Switch

My ignition switch in my 2005 RL refuses to turn on intermittently. The dashboard lights comes on but the switch refuses to move further. After multiple attempts, it finally turns over. I have had it in to Acura service but since it is intermittent, they have not been able to find anything. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
