2025 Volvo EX30 Review
Overview

With the all-new 2025 EX30, Volvo blends its signature Scandinavian design with surprisingly spry acceleration in a relatively affordable electric SUV package. Serving as the entry-level model in Volvo's EV lineup, the EX30 is quite small, with a cramped back seat and limited cargo space. However, what it lacks in outright utility, it makes up for in style, front seat comfort and available Porsche-grade performance. Range estimates vary between 250 and 261 miles, depending on the configuration.
Edmunds spotlight: Thoughtful design details of the new Volvo EX30
The new EX30 might be the most affordable electric Volvo, but it boasts many thoughtful design details to help make living with one more enjoyable. Besides a wide-ranging selection of sustainably sourced natural, renewable and recycled materials, the EX30 features practical storage solutions. They include dedicated smartphone locations, a multipurpose tray on the front floor, and charging cord storage in a compartment under the hood. Ambient lighting inspired by Scandinavian landscapes and a soundbar under the windshield contribute to the mood in the cabin, a one-pedal drive function adds to driver engagement, and an available heat pump makes the SUV more efficient. The EX30 also has a NACS adapter, making it compatible with Tesla Supercharger stations.
Competitors to consider
On price, Volvo undercuts entry-level electric vehicles from its luxury-brand rivals by thousands of dollars. An EX30 Twin Motor Ultra that accelerates to 60 mph in a stunningly quick 3.4 seconds remains a bargain compared to the more costly Audi Q4 E-tron or Genesis GV60. Volvo's value equation also makes the EX30 appealing to people shopping for a larger mainstream EV like a Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6. Will buyers accept the Volvo's smaller dimensions and reduced range compared to those alternatives? Time will tell.
Which EX30 trim does Edmunds recommend?
The point of the Volvo EX30 is to provide an upscale and affordable alternative to other electric vehicles. To take full advantage of that mission, we recommend the Single Motor Extended Range version in the Plus trim level. It's not quite as inexpensive as the single-motor EX30 Core and certainly gives up the serious acceleration available in the EX30 Twin Motor Plus, but its balance of style, features, and attainability makes it appealing.

2025 Volvo EX30 Twin Motor Performance Ultra 4dr Hatchback AWD (electric DD)
We've had the car for a few weeks now and continue to be happy and impressed with it. We chose the EX30 to be a commuter car, and it excels in this role. It's stylish, comfortable, and fun to drive. The acceleration is exceptional! The interior is thoughtfully designed, with a nod to recycled materials. This is our first EV, so it takes a bit to get used to everything being manipulated … through a touchscreen. There are literally no buttons or knobs on the dash. There is also no screen or any gauges directly in front of the driver's sightline. This requires just a few seconds of pre-trip planning to ensure you have the screen and environmental setup you desire before taking off on your trip, but it's truly not particularly inconvenient. Most controls can be manipulated via voice activation, too. The front seats are comfortable. It is a tight fit in the back seats for adults, but, as I mentioned, most of our driving is commuting. For a short trip with friends, the back seats are absolutely do-able, but we'd probably default to our other car for a longer trip with family or friends. Finally, charging is convenient as the EX30 is compatible with the Tesla charging network if you get the adapter plug. This significantly expands your charging options. Finally, I found it refreshing there are only two models and limited option packages. Both models are well-provisioned, so you don't have to go through an extensive list of extras....and extra costs. Overall, we love the EX30 and have enjoyed driving it.

Six months in and very happy with the car. Using digital key, none of difficulties noted by others with unlocking/locking.

2025 Volvo EX30 Twin Motor Performance Ultra 4dr Hatchback AWD (electric DD)
After having several plug-in hybrid vehicles, they were very enjoyable, but my goal is to go for clean energy and I see the electrical vehicle after the future. Just having a car that makes no noise, is utterly silent, and has so many features, it is a pleasure. It is very unfortunate that our government does not see that gasoline cars need to slowly move away into something of cleaner … energy. It is true there may be some range anxiety, the charging gets better and more accommodating all the time. It almost seems foolish not to invest in something that is so good for our environment and obviously will help to combat the climate change, which certainly does exist no matter where you live. Denial of atmospheric change is a denial of reality. I am extremely pleased with my ex 30 ultra and would never hesitate to buy another one.
