A love hate relationship

2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2
During the summer I was shopping for a used luxury SUV for under $10k. At first I wanted a BMW X5 because it is my dream car especially the E53 and the E70. Unfortunately I knew they would be unreliable, extremely expensive to repair, and it would be difficult to find one that has been properly taken care of. My second choice was a Volvo XC90 mainly because of the looks and the … practicality and it would be much more reliable. But then I saw a 2008 VW Touareg VR6 with 132,000 miles on the clock. Took it for a test drive and I was very impressed with it. After thinking about it and test driving 2 XC90s, an Acura MDX and RDX, I decided to buy the Touareg.
So far I had it for almost 6 months and i’m pleased to say that it has been pretty reliable, sort of. I bought it with a 1 month warranty and once that expired, it started misfiring. Shocker lol. So that costed $1800. After that 4 months later the TPMS broke which was common on the Touareg. Once I took it to my mechanic he had to change the brake pads which solved the problem but costed almost $400. Besides the repairs it has been surprisingly reliable. But here are some things I love and hate about it.
Love - The Looks: In my opinion, it looks way better than the pre-facelift. The chrome on the front is a bit tacky (especially if ur car is silver like mine) but in grey or black the car looks menacing and i love that.
Engine: The VR6 is pretty decent considering it’s the smallest engine you can get on this car but it’s powerful and sounds fantastic. Put it in sport mode and put ur foot down and you’ll be amazed.
Practicality: Thanks to its somewhat boxy shape it is very practical. I can easily fit all my things I need for college without any trouble.
Driving: On road trips, the ride is very comfortable and the seats are well supported. Around town it is super easy to drive and because it’s not to big like an XC90 it’s easy to parallel park especially with the parking sensors. The interior is good looking too even though there are a few rattles here and there but that’s expected for a 14 year old car. But I do like the off-road tech that I could use if I was brave enough lol.
Hate - Handling: Keep in mind that this car weighs over 3 tons so as I driving enthusiast, it’s not much fun in the corners. It leans way too much which will give no confidence if you wanna drive it through a back road.
Economy: Again because of the weight, it is very thirsty. On average, I get 15-16 MPG. If I drive carefully, it’ll barely touch 19 MPG. This made me wish I got a diesel instead because that can probably get over 20 MPG.
Gearbox: It’s slow and not confident what so ever. Sometimes I have to change down manually just so I can get it up a hill or whatever. Honestly wasn’t sure what VW was thinking putting such a slow gearbox in this car.
In conclusion I will say that deep down I do love my car. I love how it gives me so much presence and how not many people still have one today. I just wish it was a bit lighter so it can be a lot more better. But if you want one, I’d say get the diesel because it would add more character to the Touareg and it will give better fuel economy. Or if you have a bit saved up, get the second generation Touareg because it’s far more refined than the first generation. If you’re a driving enthusiast like me, I’d say get either a Porsche Cayenne (basically the same car so it might be just as reliable and will be way more fun to drive) or if you’re brave enough and have money saved on repairs get a BMW X5. If you just want something practical to fit everything you need then an XC90 would be the best bet. But if you want a stylish, comfortable, practical, and powerful SUV. Then by all means, the Touareg is the car for you.
