Amazing, but still not good enough for THIS.

2025 Toyota Grand Highlander
I Just bought this 6 days ago, and only have about 300 miles on it. So far, Its exceeded expections. My numbers are, in order of my priorities:
1. Safety. TSS 3.0 is much improved over previous versions. Adaptive cruise works well, even at low speeds. Blind spot monitor standard, even in this "Low End" (LE) model. I got an insurance discount when I informed my agent it has forward … emergency braking. I read that it even recoginizes pedestrians, or bicyclists. This is a big deal. Toyota put subpar Goodyear Assurance Fuel max tire on these, which is basically a marketing gimmick, to make it look like the fuel economy is better than it is. These cheap tires are not as good as, many competitors, especially on safety, but Im being generous and give it an A, even tho the tires compromise safety on wet roads, when better tires stop faster, and prevent hydroplaning. If you care for your family as much as I do, consider getting rid of these tires for Michelins, or other tires that are just plain safer by stopping in a shorter distance and dont slip as much on rain or snow.
2. Function. (Usability, usefullness). This FWD is highly useful. Its very large, and the second and third row seats "lay down nearly flat" so that a bed can be placed in it for sleeping if desired. I bought a camping stlye air matterss for that purpose. While there is a "gap" between seats" that needs to be addressed before using as a place to sleep, this is a solvable issue, such as by cutting a sheet of plywood to fit, briging the gap. Im gonna give it a "B", becasue a little better engineering could have eliminated that gap, and it wouldnt be necessary to carry a piece of plywood for comfortable sleepting in it, as has been done in other cars. Being able to tow 5000 pounds is a plus, because this could be used to pull a small camper. With this 4 cylinder, I cant recommend tryiing to tow a 30 foot camper, you will need a larger vehicle for that, such as a Chevy Tahoe, or Cadillac Escalade, or American made pickup for serious towing over 4000 pounds. Remember, when camping you will likely have at least 1000 pounds of "stuff" in the camper, such as water, propane tanks, camping gear, dishes, food etc. So, dont try to get a 5000 pound (dry weight) camper and expect it to tow it.
3. Value/cost. This large suv gets 28mpg on hiway which is good for such a large vehicle. While Im not a fan of Turbo engines, as they run hot, Im gonna let Toyota worry about the reliability long term of the turbo, as its under warranty for longer than I will own it. I will caution against thinking a turbo will last as long as a naturally aspirated engine, because my experience has not demonstrated longevity in a turbo. The oil "cooks" when it heats up, and it does heat up. You should do more frequent oil changes than recommended by Toyota. They want to sell you another car, so they are biased on oil changes. The LE is priced well at about 42,800 with FWD and "mandantory" $400 floor mats. I will be generous and give it a "B" even tho the higher trim levels are incredibly expensive with most exceeding $50,000, and some exceeding $60,000. Toyota could do better allowing us to pick and choose assessories, without bringing the price over 60 k, but dont expect that, because they sell lots of unwanted 1900 moon roofs by bundling them in packages to get accessories we really do want.
4. Cons:
A. Ripping off military Veterans. In order to get a $500 military discount, you must use Toyota financing. This is a scam. Toyota financing was "special" at 5.99%, when my credit union was 4.79%. This makes Toyota financing about $21 per month higher than my credit union. This $21 more per month times 72 months means I will pay about $1500 in increase interest payments, to get a $500 military discount. This is a scam targeting Veterans who are not that good at math.
B. Mostly, Toyota does not sell Grand Highlanders. They sell "allocations", in Toyota's favorite color, seating arrangement, and equipment, and, Toyota's price. Your needs are not considered; they have deliberately created a shortage, and will show you the door if you expect "YOUR price", your favorite color, or your model of Highlander. Toyota could stop building unwanted and unsold pickups, and build more High demand highlanders, but they prefer to create psuedo shortages which raise prices for consumers, profits for Toyota.
Summary: The vehicle is great, but not so great, that Toyota's arrogance of forcing consumers to buy whatever color, at whatever price they manufacture, without considering what we want. We should be able to order a car in our favorite color, with the desired equipment, not get rid of Toyota's spare parts inventory to save them money. And, the ripoff to Veterans, as explained, is despicable and degrading to Veterans. For these reasons, I can not recommend Toyota products, especially this one. Its good, but not that good.
