2004 Suzuki XL-7
Purchased this vehicle used from it's Original Owner in mid-2020 with less than 70,000 miles.
Having lived in an area where Winters are fierce and road salt is abundant; both it's body and undercarriage have a "fair" amount of rust but nothing too extreme for a 20 year old vehicle.
Performs exceptionally well in extreme cold, deep snowy winters. CAN get stuck depending on what you're … doing, however if you have a shovel it's not an issue whatsoever. Most of the time it plows right on through when 4x4's engaged.
(easily starts without block heater -35c)
Quite enjoyable on open summer roads as well with smooth, solid steering. It's a ladder frame BOF "truck" so she's a bit noisy/rough at times though again, not too bad for what it's worth.
The model I own is equipped with Aisin's whining, rock-solid AR-5 manual gearbox which is a joy to employ; it achieves on average 500+ KM range from a 64 litre tank of fuel.
Easily spins the rears and sounds like an old truck.
All in all a very, very well built, reliable "oldschool" Japanese jeep. Sure rings true to Suzuki's roots in the 4x4 business. Incredibly easy to maintain; doesn't require much upkeep asides from standard fluid, filter and other wear & tear items of the like.
When I first bought it, I did change: tires, spark plugs, filters, sway bar bushings, front brakes & rear drums, drive belts, light bulbs, front coil springs, battery and fluids as a sort of preventative maintainance.
Needless to say, since then, it's been operating trouble free.
Highly recommend this vehicle though beware, Suzuki's H27 engines manufactured beween '98 and early 03' are prone to issues, in the event of engine oil maintenance being neglected. Something to do with its oil passages being too narrow in the head, which can ultimately lead to damage of the timing chain system once its oil has become contaminated and can no longer squeeze through efficiently.
Later H27's, from mid-03' to their final run in the early 2010's were revised and are not as sensitive to this problem, if at all, as their earlier counterpart.
There were a number of other changes introduced for the facelifted mid 03' + models, which really made it a better vehicle. I would recommend any models built from July 03' onward, if you don't want to be bothered with doing too much maintenance; earlier modes are still excellent vehicles nonetheless.
If you really want to know what going on, just check out some videos of these Vitara's and XL-7's on the internet. They can handle A B U S E like mad... red line pegs...jumps... and of course, realize that in the late 90's Suzuki tuned some of these H27s for the Pikes Peak climb challenge. This sucker put out over 900+ HP without ever breaking a sweat.
Incredibly stout small V6!
Will be sad to see these models disappear in the future, as parts become more scarce.
