Gorgeous, almost perfect... but undriveable
Frans Hansen, 03/08/2021
2020 Maserati Levante GranSport 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo 8A)
Love the absolutely beautiful design and solid performance of my Levante, but in every day driving it is, sadly, the most annoying car I've ever owned. If you don't hold your hands exactly proper on the steering wheel (as I do when cruising on the highway), the car will continually beep annoying noises at you until you pull your hair out. The same beeping occurs if you wear the wrong … gloves while driving. Unfortunately, neither my Maserati dealer nor I have not figured any way to turn off this beeping without disconnecting all the other important connections to the steering wheel. “Sport mode” may avoid this beeping, but then you are losing all the gas mileage and other benefits of the non-sport modes of the vehicle.
Another problem, and potentially a dangerous one, is if you use left foot braking and then hit the throttle with your right foot to get the engine revs up, before you release your left foot off the brake, then after you release the brake the throttle can fail for a couple seconds (flashing a throttle failure warning message on the dash), leaving you stranded with no acceleration. This has happened to me a couple times, most notably one time when I was on the highway and had to quickly and aggressively brake and turn out of my lane because the car in front of me suddenly braked hard and made a last second lurch for the exit. To compound matters I had a big truck bearing down on my rear now that I had braked and changed lanes, so my effort to get my engine revs up by hitting the throttle early backfired, apparently then causing the throttle to fail for 1-2 seconds, leaving me sitting there with a huge truck bearing down on my rear and going too fast to stop. Luckily, my throttle finally re-engaged and I was able to give full power just in time to escape being rear-ended by the big and fast-moving truck. (I also reported this throttle failure to Maserati service, but they were unable to correct the problem.)
