Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsThe Optima engine is a small-displacement V6. At only 2.5 liters, it is only slightly larger than the four-cylinder engine also offered in the Optima. The biggest advantage of the V6 is its horsepower, which is greater by 21 over the four-banger, although interestingly enough, it has only 10 foot-pounds more torque. The V6 we tested was smooth running, making better use of its power at the top of the rpm range. Our first run was the best using a street start and letting the automatic do the shifting. The shift point from first to second was 6,050 and second to third at 6,250. Surprisingly, after that first run we weren't able to get a quicker time by playing with launch rpms and/or shift points on any subsequent attempt.
Braking commentsStopping distances were well in check with all three runs in the 120 bracket. ABS system noise was noticable but not intrusive. It did have one little quirk in that the tail would get light under heavy braking, and it felt like it wanted to wag. It did stay in the lane, and so we'll rate stability as fair. We would have given it higher praise if not for this one concern.
