2025 Ford F-150 Review
Overview

Offering a version for virtually any truck buyer, it's no wonder the Ford F-150 is the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. This full-size pickup sits above the smaller Maverick and Ranger in Ford's lineup and has enough different variations for just about anybody. Whether it's a bare-bones work truck, a near-luxury pickup with leather, gadgets, and tons of chrome, or virtually anything in between, the F-150 lineup has it covered. There's also the all-electric F-150 Lightning and heavy-duty Super Duty series, both reviewed separately.
Edmunds spotlight: Diverse lineup
The Ford F-150 boasts one of the most diverse lineups of any vehicle. Starting with the bare-bones XL trim to the luxurious King Ranch and the powerful off-road-focused Raptor, it seems as though there's a model for every kind of truck buyer. If that's not enough, there are also endless options to appoint your truck to perfectly suit your needs. This is particularly true when it comes to towing, as the F-150 can pull up to 13,500 pounds when properly equipped. Trailer backup assist, an integrated trailer brake controller and extended blind-spot warning further ease the burden on the driver.
Competitors to consider
Competition is understandably tight in the full-size pickup class and there's no doubt rivals have the class-leading F-150 in their crosshairs. The Ram 1500 is also a great choice for its comfortable ride and refined interior, while the Toyota Tundra has smooth power and easy-to-use controls. The GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado are also in the running, but they don't manage to meaningfully distinguish themselves from the rest. You should definitely start your truck search with the Ford F-150, so be sure to check out our Expert Rating.
What’s it like to live with?
Back in 2021 we added Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid to our long term fleet. During its time with us, we took it on multiple camping and other road trips, and of course used it to move untold numbers of boxes. The hybrid powertrain garnered almost zero complaints about power, with the combination of the hybrid's electric motors and the powerful turbocharged V6 proving significantly more than adequate. All the while, the F-150 impressed us with its ride quality and quiet cabin, even though our XLT trim wasn't particularly bougie inside. About the only real downside was fuel economy numbers that rarely reached the EPA estimates. We managed just under 20 mpg overall, which isn't bad for a powerful full-sized pickup, but we'd hoped for better. For more specific thoughts, check out our F-150 Hybrid long-term review here.
Which F-150 trim does Edmunds recommend?
We think the XLT represents a great overall value. If you can stretch your budget a bit, the hybrid powertrain is worth getting because of the long-term gas savings. Broadly speaking, consider an F-150 with Ford's BlueCruise hands-free system if you do a lot of highway driving and Pro Power Onboard if you use your F-150 a lot for recreation or job sites.

Helpful trims summary and side-by-side comparison chart
Ford F-150 models
The 2025 Ford F-150 is offered in six primary trim levels: XL, STX, XLT, Lariat, Platinum and King Ranch. There are also the off-road-oriented Tremor, Raptor and Raptor R versions that exist outside the traditional lineup. There are three cab styles — regular, SuperCab (extended) and SuperCrew (crew cab) — and three bed lengths depending on cab style. Along with the many trim levels and cab styles, the F-150 offers six available powertrains. All are paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Keep reading for our breakdown of the F-150's powertrains and each trim's significant standard and optional features.
The engine lineup includes:
- Turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 (325 hp, 400 lb-ft)
- 5.0-liter V8 (400 hp, 410 lb-ft)
- Turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 (400 hp, 500 lb-ft)
- Raptor-specific turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 (450 hp, 510 lb-ft)
- Raptor R-specific supercharged 5.2-liter V8 (720 hp, 640 lb-ft)
- A hybrid powertrain (Ford's PowerBoost) that combines the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with an electric motor and a battery pack (430 hp, 570 lb-ft)
(Note: The all-electric F-150 Lightning is reviewed separately.)

Adds to the XL with:
- 18-inch alloy wheels

- Standard 4WD
- 18-inch alloy wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires
- Skid plates
- Selectable terrain driving modes
- Uniquely tuned off-roading suspension
- Locking rear differential
Raptor
The off-road-oriented Raptor includes a higher-output turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, 4WD with low-range gearing and more. Broadly, it combines many of the luxury-oriented features from the King Ranch with the off-road features of the Tremor, plus:
- 17-inch alloy wheels with 35-inch all-terrain tires
- Raptor-specific off-roading suspension with adaptive Fox shock absorbers
- Raptor-specific fender flares and grille
Raptor R
The Raptor R swaps the Raptor's turbocharged V6 for a much more potent supercharged V8. It also comes standard with 37-inch tires that are otherwise an option on the regular Raptor.
As you'd probably expect of a full-size pickup, the F-150 is available with all sorts of options. Most lower trim levels can be fitted with options that come standard on higher trims. Other significant options to look out for are:

- Skid plates
- All-terrain tires
- Tow/Haul package
- Integrated trailer brake controller (allows adjustment of a trailer's brakes from inside the vehicle)
- Onboard Scales (measures and displays the weight of the F-150's payload)

2023 Ford F-150 Lariat 4dr SuperCrew 5.5 ft. SB (2.7L 6cyl Turbo 10A)
Just like someone would comment coming from the Toyota world the F150 is like a Spaceship. I initially went from a 2013 Tacoma Baja Ed to the Tundra TRD SR5. The Tacoma had a better package than the Tundra so it felt like a downgrade, then I totally went like 3 steps up with a 2022 F150 Lariat. OMG the technology package is unbelievable, the comfort inside is awesome. The F150 has so … many features, you'll probably never used them all through out your ownership but they are there. The 3.7 ecoboost engine is powerful without breaking the bank for fuel, this is something where Toyota has totally dropped the ball. The space in the Crew Cab is a lot better than the Tacoma or the Tundra Double Cab. The interior design so much safe to use than that on the Tundra. Simply for instance the heated seats button in the Tundra are located way below the AC or radio controls you actually have to be almost look under the dashboard to find them, this is a safety issue since you have to take your eyes off the road in order to either turn them on or off.
For a V6 engine having the same response of a V8 2 litters bigger and being faster it says a lot.
With all the safety features even my insurance went a little down. I couldn't be more happy.
A real pain

2023 Ford F-150 King Ranch 4dr SuperCrew 4WD 5.5 ft. SB (5.0L 8cyl 10A)
I have owned well over a dozen Ford and Lincoln vehicles including several top trim F150s and never had any issues until this one. At 4500 miles the differential pinion seal was leaking. Got it replaced. At 5200 miles it was leaking again. Got it replaced. Now at 5500 miles it has started leaking again. From the time I picked it up, I would notice a shudder that was noticeable when I … would accelerate just 3-4 mph. That issue has not been resolved. I think the driveshaft is out of balance or the pinion bearing is bad and that destroys the seals. It has totally destroyed my confidence in this vehicle. I can live with the other minor glitches like phone not connecting and navigation slow to start, but the drivetrain issue has marked my end of Ford products. Ford can say goodbye to the probably over a million bucks I’ve spent on Ford vehicles and anymore I might have spent. My advice is to stay away

2023 Ford F-150 Tremor 4dr SuperCrew 4WD SB (5.0L 8cyl 10A)
I’ve owned many cars and trucks over the years, and I’ve always had a preference for Ford. I sold my 2005 F150 XLT to buy my brand new 2023 F150 Tremor 402- high option. By 5k miles I was seeing bugs. The Sync display would freeze, the power windows wouldn’t roll down when remote started, interior plastics would rattle. These things were annoying, but I could live with them. The came the … clunking. It felt light I got rear ended. Coming to a stop, the truck started clunking. I then noticed it would downshift harshly, enough to jolt myself and others in the truck, or sometimes it would downshift too early, or not downshift at all - like total power loss when trying to go uphill or turn. I took it to the dealer, and they said even though they are aware of these defects ( covered in TSB 22-2428), Ford won’t authorize repairs unless they are repeatable - even though I have videos showing these happening multiple times. This truck has 8,400 miles and I HATE driving it. Google the Ford 10R80 issues before you ever think about buying one of these trucks. Ford has NOT fixed this issue, and those with them are stuck living with them and driving a clunky, jerky truck until the transmission eventually fails.
Junk IWE system

2023 Ford F-150 XLT 4dr SuperCrew 6.5 ft. SB (2.7L 6cyl Turbo 10A)
Very disappointed! Bought a new 2023 F-150 XLT in October 2023. The iwe system started acting up at the first bit of cold weather less than a month later. Been in the shop 4 times and it still isn't fixed. They replaced iwe and wheel bearings on one trip and then replaced the iwe again on another trip. The dealer has contacted Ford and they don't have a fix at this time. After doing some … research I have found that this is widespread in XLT and lower packages. I was given a 2023 loaner, and it has the same problem. I have been trying for a buyback but have been denied so far.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2025 Ford F-150, so we've included reviews for other years of the F-150 since its last redesign.
