Eastside Subaru
Dealership Sales Review
Test drive was good and the salesman very pleasant. They immediately honored the Costco price so I didn't spend time haggling... or so I thought as there was a small price increase due to mats, not having the right color, etc. So far so good. Then I decided to get the very low-rate Subaru financing and went to the financing department, and that was the start of two very frustrating hours during which they tried to scam me a few times. They stopped quoting me the car price they gave me initially and insisted in only giving me monthly rates (until the final sheet of paperwork that finally showed what I was paying for). Luckily I had done the calculation at home and I knew their numbers were completely off the mark. At some point I asked to talk to the manager and after some insistence they said they gave me a much higher rate than the current Subaru rate. They said this was only a "mistake", which I doubt as selling cars and financing is their everyday work and I can't believe they don't know what the Subaru financing rate was (and it had not changed for at least a month). They also had included (without telling me) an origination fee to drive the car to the dealer from somewhere else, which I had them remove. The new monthly payment was much lower, but still higher than I expected. I declined all the various optional insurances and services they offered, but that didn't lower the monthly rate, so near the very end the numbers still didn't match. They asked me a last question, whether I wanted the same insurance they had already offered me earlier, but this time they would throw it in "for free". Of course, if something is an extra value for free there can't be much wrong with it, but as by now I didn't trust them I declined anyways. The finance guy insisted and acted surprised... why on earth was I declining something free? And was I really sure? I didn't budge, and at that point my monthly rate mysteriously dropped and came close to what I expected given the price of the car (the remaining small difference turned out to be small fees, I have no idea whether they are mandatory or optional). I pressed for an explanation for the last moment price difference and the reason was that the insurance was "free", but not really free, i.e. it was "free" (according to him) but only because he had already included its price in my payment. As the price he gave me already included insurance, he "reasoned", adding insurance was "free" as I wouldn't end up paying more than the price (inclusive of insurance) that he was already quoting to me. Note that earlier when he proposed me to include insurance by paying for it, I had already said no, but he just ignored that and kept it in the price (without telling me!) until the very end. If I had accepted the "free" insurance, I would have ended actually paying much more for it without ever understanding I was actually buying it. If this is not an illegal scam, I don't know what is.
