2004 Vette engine cleaning costs Almost $4400. Issue is still there,???????
Written by palmerwi on 11/06/2009

First i want to say My 2004 Corvette is in pretty good condition, has been a daily driver for 4.5 years without any issues and 57000 miles, slightly over 10k miles per year. I am going back to the dealer and will try to get some assistance in understanding the following. Took my Vette into the dealership needing the following: 1.) 4-Wheel alignment 2.) Diagnose, Engine in Reduced power mode due to ingesting water at carwash....??? really no kidding normal manual carwash cleaning entire car and engine bay... 3.) oil change 4.) odd ticking/tapping/sewing machine noise that changes with engine RPM... Lifters, Valves? What was good and what is bad... first the good: Good: 1.) 4-wheel alignment 2.) Diagnose "Engine in Reduced Power Mode" Replaced Throttle Body... 3.) Oil Change BAD: 1.) Price of Throttle body was over $700 and $900 with labor. I searched the net and Could Not Find a Throttle Body for more than $500. Wow huge Markup and seems to be used not new part also. 2.) After completing all of the GOOD items still had a ticking/tapping/sewing machine sounds that change with engine RPM. 3.) Shop Recommended dissassemble top half of motor to find tap, states may be a bad lifter or 2 so i approve an additional $500 engine teardown, I am than told I have a couple of bad Lifters and will cost an addition $3500. to rebuild and replace ALL of the lifters and head bolts and gaskets, i can understand the gaskets for a rebuild. 4.) I pay just under $4400. for a top half of engine rebuild, Oil Change, Wheel Alignment, Throttle Body replacement and Labor. 5.) driving home the ticking/tapping/sewing machine sounds are very apparent with zero change in volume pitch or otherwise. 6.) stop by another local shop and have them take a courtesy look and they say it looks like the squeeking is coming from one of the pullies or belts not the engine... 7.) I will go by Huffines Chevrolet Plano, TX again tomorrow and very nicely ask why i paid so much for something that is not even fixed...??? 8.) maybe i am just dumb for expectiong that a Corvette Certified Mechanic in a huge Chevrolet Dealership can tell the difference between a Lifter and belt/pullie??? I will report back to this review with my experience after tomorrow I do not have any bad feelings at this point and have been a customer for over 2 years, I believe it to be an honest mistake on the Mechanics part and I am sure the Manager will help correct the situation.

Had a Master Mechanic and a younger mechanic verify I was not hearing things and that there is what the younger mechanic called "Supercharger Whine" Well I dont have a supercharger... Still not too happy I did verify with the Shop that there were 2 bad lifters although I find this very hard to believe as the same exact sound was there under raised RPM as I originally wanted troubleshot and than cost me a Top Half Engine rebuild... Still very happy.. the parts were so over priced even the highest prices on the internet from many good businesses including my favorite SummitRacing.com... Anyway I went home still bothered and spent the next 2 hours surfing the internet for "belt, pullie noises" in C5 Vettes and 2004 inparticular. well I hit paydirt... I found a corvette club blog describing exactlt my issue and how to fix...!!! Well per the sites reccomendation I reversed the direction of the Longer Serpentine belt and visually identified and found what appeared to be "Fibers about 5 inches long and pieces of rubber" stuck on what appears to be a pully on a pump of some sort that is located on the right side of the engine pullie directly under the tensioner. I Had a belt replaced about a year ago as part of scheduled service but dont know if that what the debris was. after that was complete I started it up and GUESS WHAT? no noise zilch, zero, nada, none it was magically gone.. I am an IT guy and have not worked on any vehicle in 20 years but I would have expected the Mechanic that Disassembled the entire top half of the motor did not see this...... So what did I learn? 1. always get your replacement parts back! I do agree that the Throttle Body could have been bad due to the engine washing. But I was charged and paid an extra $3400. due to a noise caused by debris caught in my pully... I hope when Mr. Huffines or Mr. Huffines Sr. hears of this they will do the right thing but I am not holding my breath.. I truely feel my vehicle was misdiagnosed and I was told I needed the entire top half of my motor rebuilt was incorrect and I should be reimbursed something or given a really nice extended warrantee... I am not mad as the service people are human and that is to error... but they need to admit they messed up and I paid for it..
