Low Integrity Sales Manager
Written by 06/30/2009
onAfter accepting my deposit of $500 just before closing on a used Accord, the car was sold to another customer the following day before I could return. This ostensibly took place because after looking at Consumer Reports data later in the evening and seeing the sale price should be $1500 less, I called and said I wanted to discuss the price. I did not cancel the order but only indicated a desire to renegotiate. Supposedly in three hours another customer came and paid for the car at a price that the sales manager would not disclose. No effort was made to contact me.

There is a personal reason for our shock and dismay at the unethical way we were treated by the sales manager at Tarrytown Honda. As the sales people, and perhaps the manager (who introduced himself to us) knew, this was to be our son's first car, shared with his mom. Our son was with us during the purchase and joined me when I returned to take delivery today, his 17th birthday.
Frankly I don't know if the manager received a better offer, or was nervous that we were backing out of the deal. I had not threatened to cancel the order, but certainly hoped that the price was going to be discussed as had been offered during my phone conversation with the salesman.
I suppose we should credit this as a learning experience for our son, but it will not help the reputation of a dealer whose customers are our neighbors.
