Dealership Sales Review
Long story short I avoided getting ripped off, no matter how hard they tried. My Story: Start: Manager Manager: Can we help you? Me: Hi I would like to buy a Silver 2008 Nissan Altima 3.5 with a Manual transmission & the sports package? Manager: So you would like a 2.5? Me: No I would like a 3.5 Manager: Are you sure you don't want a 2.5? Me: Um... yes? 20 Minutes in: Test Drive Yay best part! 30 Minutes in: Sales Associate Anyway, after a bit of re-iterating exactly what I said in my first sentence, they sent me to a relatively helpful sales associate. This entire time they are saying that I can't afford the car (they haven't seen my pay stub or even know what I do for a living). 60 Minutes in: Finance Finally they realize that I am actually going to buy the car. So I get sent to a back room to talk with a finance person. This person shows me lots of numbers (which I already had figured out) and then we come to an agreement on the rate and everything. 90 Minutes in: Finance Attempts to screw me (hidden extra $100 / mo & 4% higher APR) After agreeing to a specific cost for my car, I get the paperwork. The financial associate says that the paperwork is just normal paperwork. Then I notice that my monthly payment has just jumped over $100 from what the agreed price was and the APR has now risen by 4%. 120 Minutes in: Finance Attempts to tell me I'm wrong and should pay the extra I clearly state that I already have insurance, that I plan on paying off my car in time so I don't need any extra insurance or additional secret things they put in my contract. 180 Minutes in: Finance finally agrees to what we had agreed on 90 minutes ago. I can go get my car. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What Saved My Life (And will help anyone who wants to buy a car): 1) Never Buy at the first dealership you go into (you can come back if you like) 2) Always read your contracts!!! 3) Go in knowing the MSRP and that typically the dealer marks up this by a fair amount 4) Shop around, get quotes from multiple dealerships 5) Do your research, is this a car you really want? What type of warranty do you want, how much do they cost?
