No ultimate driving machine w/o Sport/M-Sport pkg

constv, 07/29/2021
2020 BMW 5 Series 540i xDrive 4dr Sedan AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo 8A)
I've been driving 5 series since 2003, and this is my 4th. I absolutely LOVED my first 2003 530, it was powerful, tight, very responsive. I skipped the 2004-2010 models because I didn't like the boring, conservative body styling. When I went shopping again in 2012, I discovered that the base configurations had become "softer" and less spirited. The familiar "ultimate driving machine" … feel came back once I tested a 2012 535 xDrive with a Sport Package. In 2016 I test-drove a new 545 (v8) - no SP - and was disappointed again: the steering wheel felt too wobbly, the car felt to soft and didn't handle as well as I was used to. Extra HP didn't matter once the handling was not as sporty. I ended up buying a 535 xDrive M-Sport that felt amazing! It has become clear to me that BMW no longer includes the hyped-up "ultimate driving machine" experience with their base configurations. It's a sad fact. Every time I get into a base config 530 loner, I feel as if I am driving a cheap Ford Focus, or something like that. These days, you do need the SP or M-Sport upgrades to truly experience the famous BMW handling. That will cost you $3+K extra, but it's definitely worth it - unless you are a poser who wants a BMW as a status symbol and does not care much about the actual BMW driving experience. FWIIW, my conclusion: 530 (i4 engine) is underpowered and is not worth consideration if you are buying a BMW to enjoy driving it, not just to be seen in it. A 540 is an outstanding car, but only if you get SP, or better yet, the M-Sport package (you could get the steering and suspension upgrades individually, but it would be cheaper and easier to find as a package.) That gives you the awesomeness of the superior BWM handling, responsiveness, stiffer suspension and precise steering, a nicer steering wheel (vs the cheap thin one that comes with the base config.) A night and day difference. The same goes for 550. If you have the money, get the M550. If not, the 540 M-Sport is all you need to get the chills you are looking for!
