Most Wanted Coupe Under $35,000
What's This?
Winner: BMW 3 Series
BMW's 3 Series sedan is redesigned for 2006, but the coupe is a previous-generation carryover. And that's OK with us. Even in its seventh year, this is still the most desirable coupe in its price range. The 3 Series coupe is a joy to drive whether the road is curvy or straight, thanks to its smooth inline-six engines and a painstakingly tuned suspension that holds the body tight in the corners without punishing its passengers on crumbling expressways. And if you want feedback, this coupe draws its driver in on the action like few others can. Interiors are luxurious if slightly austere with top-quality materials, supportive front seats and a surprisingly useful rear seat. Next year will bring an all-new 3 Series coupe, but as far as we're concerned, the current version is a classic.
Honorable Mention: Infiniti G35
For those turned off by the snootiness of BMW ownership, Infiniti's G35 coupe makes a strong case for itself. Built on a stretched version of Nissan's 350Z platform that makes room for 2+2 seating, the G35 coupe shares the Z's 3.5-liter V6, rated for an impressive 298 hp (or 280 with the automatic transmission). Midrange torque is prodigious, and it's complemented by sharp handling characteristics that will satisfy all but the most demanding enthusiasts. The G35 is plenty comfortable, too, with its smooth, commuter-friendly ride and spacious interior. One downside to the G is its lack of interior opulence, but with a price tag that's thousands less than the 3 Series, those seeking a premium car that delivers serious performance will hardly be disappointed.
