Small Crew Cab Pickup

2002 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab Winner: Dodge Dakota
"A great blend of style, comfort and space."

Since it won our recent Compact Crew Cab Comparison Test, it should come as no surprise that the Dakota reigns as our editors' pick in this category. With no-nonsense styling borrowed from its big brother, the Dodge Ram, the Dakota looks as sharp as it drives. The Dakota's appeal rests on more than just good looks. Its standard V6 rated at 175 horsepower is enough to compete with just about anything else in the class. What made us fall in love with this truck, however, is the available 4.7-liter 235-horsepower V8. Mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, this engine transforms the Dakota into a wickedly fun street machine that had us stomping the gas pedal at every opportunity. Interior accommodations are equally as appealing, as the Dakota combines straightforward simplicity with high-quality materials. Its midsize dimensions give both front- and rear-seat passengers ample room, along with more cargo room in the 5-foot-3-inch bed. The suspension soaks up uneven roads with ease while still providing a sure-footed grip in the corners. Available in both two- and four-wheel-drive versions in either SLT or Sport trim, the Dakota Quad Cab can be configured as a basic street truck or an all-out off-road machine. No matter what kind of compact crew cab you're looking for, we think the Dakota Quad Cab can give you all the best of what this category has to offer.

Honorable Mention: Toyota Tacoma

No surprises here. Toyota has always put out a solid compact pickup. So when it finally decided to offer a four-door, we figured it would be good. With a surprisingly strong V6 and a well-tuned four-speed automatic, the Double Cab moves quickly no matter how many passengers or how much cargo is on board. If you're looking to go off-road, the Tacoma offers a TRD Suspension package with stiffer shocks and springs and a life-saving rear differential locker. Less enthusiastic street-minded folk will appreciate the Tacoma's smooth ride and high-quality interior materials. Simplified controls make for easy operation and minimal dashboard clutter. Toyota build quality ensures a trouble-free ownership experience and solid resale value. If you want a crew cab truck with a minimal amount of hassles and maximum off-road fun, the Tacoma Double Cab is a safe bet that we can recommend wholeheartedly.
