I would definitely go for one with side airbags, if not side-curtain airbags. The Honda Odyssey, beginning with the 2002 model year, had standard side airbags but not the curtains. (one major reason I bought the 2002 versus the 2001) The curtain airbags were standard in all Odysseys starting with the redesigned 2005 models. The Sienna I am not so sure but I'm pretty sure that side curtain airbags were available ... Read More

Certainly a tuneup including plugs and wires is in order. I'd check the cap and rotor as well. However, you didn't say what the mileage is on the van but I'd vote for replacing the oxygen sensor.

Bought it 2 years ago but never tuned it up. I have only put maybe 2000 miles on it since I purchased it. Do not know if previous owner had tuned it up before selling it to me.

Just for the record, the worst minivan I owned (out of the 7) was a 1983 VW Vanagon 9 passenger GL. Talk about a dud! Still, we loved that unsafe van. We bought the 1994 Grand Caravan because I was able to special order it with ABS plus '94 was the first year for dual frontal airbags. Third worse car. I don't know the recent failure per vehicle from trannies on Honda or DCX. But you seem too, it someone says they had trany problems then maybe they did. Let's correct the record here....I'm not the one counting tranny repairs at a DCX dealer, then proclaiming the problems have continued since 1993. That distinction goes to who started this negative DCX bashing thread, NOT ME. I have never made a claim ... Read More

Do you really think a Odyssey owner would rate his or her van lower after having paid a premium price for it over DCX vans. Socalwad excepted because he's convinced he got the best price on his first Odyssey after buying 3 or 4? DCX vans. I would think you would still have a warrantee on that transmission if it was done by the dealer. For those of you that have your van cutting in and out or the engine quitting and restarting later. I had a 1993 Eagle Vision that did that. At first the dealer couldn't find anything wrong. When it got worse, it turned out to be the crankshaft sensor. I believe that was ... Read More

I called my brother just a few minutes ago and asked him about his minivan. I was wrong in it being a Dodge, it's a Plymouth Caravan. A 1993, with 128,000 miles on it. He said outside of normal servicing, he replaced the freeze plugs on the engine last year and replaced brakes and rotors about two and a half years ago. It's a 3.3, which I drove once and it ... Only one DC minivan has had transmission failure of the many owned by people I know. That was a 1996 T&C LXi used to tow a large trailer all the time and the transmission failed at 180,000 miles.      Meanwhile, 3 sisters in a family I know had purchased Ford Taurus. The 1990 Taurus transmission failed at just over 100,000 miles, the 1993 Taurus transmission failed at 115,000 miles and most recently ... Read More

Have not read all 15 pages of posts--only about every third page or so. I have noticed, however, one piece of pretty interesting information. The vast majority of the problems are for 1996 to 1998 vans. One guy about 10 posts ago bought a used and badly abused 2002 T&C (as evidenced by the 35k mi in less than a year!) and is having problems, just about every one else has ... Read More

To the person who quoted CR giving the Chrysler. minivans a thumb up, that is no longer the case. They no longer recommend them because the quality has slipped. I too owned a 1994 Dodge Grand Caravan. The van was an exchange for a 1993 lemon Dodge Intrepid bought back under the Customer Arbitration Program. The van was almost as bad as the Intrepid. Edmunds TMV puts the value of a 1995 Dodge Caravan at about $4200 private party and $5200 at a dealer. The mileage sounds a little on the high side maybe? You left out a few variables, though--Grand? Model? Options? Based on the info given, you might offer closer to $4000-$4200 and see what happens. One thing to look out for. I must be lucky we own a 1993 GC with 200,000 km with the ogrinal tranny. The scret regular oil changes every 5ooo km and change the tranny oil and filter every year ( about 30,000km). But watch out for the rear wiper motor replaced twice which means cutting off the wiper arm too, so $150 motor plus $20 wiper arm. also the front tie rods repaira are a killer.
