2014 Chevrolet Silverado: Engine Break-in Procedure

August 6, 2013

2014 Chevrolet Silverado

This is the recommended break-in procedure for our new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. It isn't too overbearing. That is, until you read the first bullet point, "keep the vehicle speed at 55 mph for the first 500 miles." What do you think about that?

It seems 50 would be fine but the manual wants 500 miles!

"...keep the vehicle speed at 55 mph OR LESS for the first 500 miles." Yes 500, not 50. That is what I see in that picture. Given the legendary impatience of the Edmunds staff and the LA freeway drivers, I predict that this will either be ignored entirely or result in some "fun". How about driving to work on the surface streets for a change? Do they still make "Running in, please pass" signs?

This is a one-paragraph post. Maybe you could, you know, proof it before hitting "publish" - ? As for the manual, it's stupid. What you are actually wanting to do is restrict rpms and probably throttle opening for the first x number of miles, not road speed. So if I did a bunch of brake-torque burnouts but kept it under 55 mph, that would be ok?

True break-in of a motor likely comes many miles beyond the 500 miles indicated. Certainly, avoid putting heavy loads on the motor such as towing. Also avoid excessive idling. I wouldn't idle for more than a couple minutes, especially within the first 250 miles. The suggestion to avoid extended travel distances without varying the RPMs seems strange, but I'm guessing the engineers that design & build motors, know better than me.

Painful. I guess no Sammy Hagar tunes until after mile 500?
