2014 BMW 328i xDrive GT

You may not like the way the 2014 BMW 3 Series GT looks, but it's hard to argue with the utility of its hatchback configuration. Compared to the 3 Series sedan, the GT offers nearly six additional cubic feet of cargo space. Not only that, it's far more accessible cargo space which makes it even more useful as Dan mention on his road trip.

There's something about being able to see the whole cargo area that makes the difference. Instead of shoving things toward the back, you can more easily configure things as you load them. Add to that the fact that there's no intrusion from any trunk lid arms or their covers and it's easy to see why this hatchback setup is so handy.

    Actually, it's easy to argue against it since the similarily priced 328x drive wagon is much, much better looking and likely has even more cargo space. Plus, since the rear hatch in the wagon doesn't slope anywhere near as much as the window does on this ugly thing, you can actually use some of the space behind the seats without folding the seats. This vehicle makes absolutely no sense to me and I hope it's the sales flop that the even uglier 5 GT has been

    The thing is that Audi (and previously Mazda) have shown, you can design an attractive hatchback sedan. Fortunately BMW knows this too and we will soon have the lovely 4 series Gran Coupe.

    The picture from the road trip made it look like the hatch was very tall when opened. Maybe it was just the camera angle but can you provide a picture inside a garage or with some other reference to see how tall the open hatch is?

  • It looks from the picture like the plastic side trim on the opening doesn't match up well with the upper section of trim

  • Not only is the 3 series wagon better in every way than this hatch, it also has much better rearward visibility. The only argument that can be made for this hatch is if you pretend that the wagon does not exist.

    Great interior space was the whole selling point of the Pontiac Aztek, too.

    Yeah sure the looks don't matter. Who cares if it's butt ugly. You know, maybe you should just trade it in and go straight for a econoline van. Now THOSE things have cargo space.

  • Unless you only put people 5'9 or less in the back seat for short trips, there's a strong argument for the GT. The 3-series has been a barely-acceptable 4-seat vehicle for any distance trip. The newest version gives the most seating yet, but it's still just OK. The selling point of this car is not just the hatch, but additional badly needed legroom in the back seat. I tried the last-generation wagon, but all the headroom with tight legroom just made it even more maddening. It's not as good looking as the wagon, no question. The comparisons above are obviously exaggerated. But it does offer utility in a way no other 3 series does. Audi and Mazda wagons have the same problems. IMO its not a bad looking vehicle and does provide space more like an X3 without actually having to get an SUV.
