LAS VEGAS — Toyota is displaying several custom versions of its midsize Tacoma and full-size Tundra pickups at this week's 2011 SEMA Auto Show.
The Toyota Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series Limited Edition is a pre-production look at a new series that will be launched in spring 2012. Aimed at off-road enthusiasts, the T/X (for Tacoma Extreme) package from Toyota Racing Development will be available on both the Tacoma Access and Double Cab 4x4 models equipped with the TRD Off-Road package, and eventually may be expanded to the PreRunner as well.
The TRD T/X Baja Series includes a 4.0-liter V6 engine with either six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, BFGoodrich T/A KO tires (LT265/70R16), bead-lock-style off-road wheels with an exclusive gunmetal gray finish, TRD cat-back exhaust, TRD Bilstein racing shocks and unique Baja Series graphics.
The beach-themed Oakley Surf Tacoma starts with a Tacoma 4x4 with a TRD-supercharged V6. Smithbuilt has added a Flowmaster stainless-steel exhaust, an Icon Stage 3 lift kit, Billet A-arms, new leaf springs for added height, a new front coil-over system and Walker Evans 17-by-8-inch bead-lock wheels with a flat-black finish and shod with BF Goodrich 285/75R17 all-terrain tires. The cabin gets Wet Okole Hawaii custom embroidered seat covers, Topstitch interior mods to door panels, headliner and carpet, a Kicker sound system and an Oakley icon. The exterior includes a purpose-built roof rack, covered truck bed with storage for wet suits and other equipment, plus an ice chest, barbecue grill and integrated shower system.
The Long Beach Racers Tacoma is said to be inspired by the upcoming 2012 Tacoma TRD T|X TRD Baja Series, and will be competing in the 2011 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. Toyota says the race truck is a grassroots effort of Long Beach Racers, a group of Toyota enthusiasts that specializes in racing Toyota trucks in Baja. Among the mods are a low-profile roll cage, Bilstein race shocks, 35-inch BFGoodrich Project Tires on 16-inch TRD Baja Series wheels, Hella HID lights, Mastercraft race seats, harnesses and window nets, TRD Big Brake kit and a custom wrap with a T/X Baja Series graphic.
The full-size Tundra Double Cab 4x4 provided the foundation for the Toyota Ultimate Motocross Truck, a project with DC Shoes and West Coast Customs. WCC fitted a Camburg Racing suspension lift kit, Fox Racing shocks, KMC 18-inch wheels with General tires, Line-X custom rough-texture paint, a roof rack that can also be used as a viewing deck, fold-up bed sides, side-opening tailgate, an air compressor, a winch to load bikes, a hidden ramp, custom embroidered interior and more.
Edmunds.com says: The Toyota Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series Limited Edition Pickup is surely a contender for "longest nameplate at the show."
