PARIS — The Peugeot Onyx concept, a minimalist supercar that previews the future design direction of the French automaker, was unveiled ahead of its debut at the 2012 Paris Auto Show.

The Onyx features the classic supercar wedge shape, but veers in another direction with a reliance on raw materials and a felt cockpit trimmed with "wood" made from recycled newspapers.

The Onyx is powered by a mid-mounted 3.7-liter V8 hybrid HDi FAP engine that churns out 600 horsepower. It is linked to a six-speed sequential transmission. The supercar also gets Peugeot's Hybrid4 system. The system uses a kinetic energy recovery system to charge lithium-ion batteries. These batteries power an electric motor that adds another 80 hp.

The hand-built Onyx features bodywork made of copper and carbon fiber painted matte black, along with 20-inch wheels. Other exterior details include a "double-bubble" roof, small spoilers and taillights with the Peugeot three-claw design. The lightweight supercar weighs in at just 2,425 pounds.

The cabin is designed to create a cocoon around the passengers. The dashboard trim, with its unusual recycled newspaper material, includes some original newspaper print.

Edmunds says: Peugeot uses the Onyx to showcase the talents of its designers, but it's unclear just how much of the supercar and its offbeat details will end up in the real world.
