WOODCLIFF LAKE, New Jersey — Nearly three years after its European launch, BMW's compact crossover, the X1, will finally arrive on American shores this fall as a 2013 model. The 2013 BMW X1 will be formally unveiled next month at the 2012 New York Auto Show.

Introduced at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, the X1 went on sale across Europe in 2010 and originally was scheduled to reach U.S. dealers in late 2010. But the German automaker, citing strong European sales and a weak dollar-euro exchange rate, last year put the U.S. launch of the X1 on indefinite hold, electing eventually to bring the vehicle here as part of a mid-cycle freshening for 2013.

BMW on Thursday said the face-lifted 2013 X1 will make its "world debut" at the New York auto show, along with the 2012 M6 Convertible. Also making appearances here are the 2013 M6 Coupe, the 2013 X6 M and the 2013 640i Gran Coupe.

Edmunds.com says: BMW insists X1 demand has been high outside the U.S. We think the delayed entry cost it innumerable potential customers here.
