LOS ANGELES — The base 2015 Porsche Macan S will start at $50,895, including a $995 destination charge, when the so-called "Baby Cayenne" compact crossover goes on sale in the U.S. in the spring. The Macan debuted at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The top-of-the-line 2015 Porsche Macan Turbo starts at $73,295, including shipping.
A fully loaded Macan Turbo can top $100,000 when equipped with such options as ceramic brakes, a panoramic sunroof, full leather interior and air suspension, said Nick Twork, a Porsche Cars North America spokesman, in a phone conversation with Edmunds.
The Macan configurator will go live on Wednesday. At that point, Twork said pricing on specific options will be posted. They were in the process of being finalized in Germany at the time of this writing.
The Macan is the biggest headliner at the show.
"We are playing in a space that has not been served," Twork said. "Nobody offers a car in the segment with 400 horsepower."
However, the Macan targets such opponents as the Range Rover Evoque, the top-of-the-line BMW X3 and Audi Q5.
The base Macan S is equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine delivering 340 horsepower. The Macan Turbo is equipped with a 400-hp twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 engine. The Macan Turbo sprints from zero to 60 in 4.6 seconds and has a top track speed of 164 mph, according to the automaker. The 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 is being used for the first time in a Porsche.
Both models come with standard all-wheel drive and a seven-speed double-clutch transmission.
Twork said EPA fuel economy numbers on the Macan will be released closer to its on-sale date. No estimates were provided by Porsche.
Standard equipment includes a multifunction sport steering wheel with paddle shifters, 19-inch wheels, a high-performance audio system and a power tailgate.
From a design standpoint, Porsche said the Macan takes some of its cues from the Porsche 918 Spyder and the Porsche 911. It said the Macan adopts the basic shape of its headlights from the 918 Spyder and the profile of the rear fenders from the 911.
The name Macan comes from the Indonesian word for tiger.
Edmunds says: You can get into a 2015 Macan for around $50,000 and it won't be a Spartan experience, thanks to the generous standard features.
