LOS ANGELES — Ford has confirmed that it will bring the 2014 Ford Fiesta ST, which is debuting at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, to the U.S. in 2013. Pricing and launch timing have not been announced.

The Fiesta ST, which targets the Chevrolet Sonic RS and Mini Cooper S, will be equipped with a 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that churns out an estimated 197 horsepower. Ford mentioned the Chevrolet Sonic RS and Mini Cooper S in its official statement about the launch of the Fiesta ST here.

"Unlike the competition, Fiesta ST doesn't simply look like a performance car; it's got the guts to back it up," Ford said.

Ford said the Fiesta ST will be offered exclusively as a five-door hatchback in North America with a six-speed manual transmission. While the EPA has yet to post official fuel-economy numbers on the Fiesta ST, Ford noted that it is projected to achieve up to 34 mpg.

Ford had been teasing its U.S. plans for the Fiesta ST for months, saying as recently as March that it remained open to bringing the car to the U.S.

Details of the Fiesta ST include a unique grille and chin spoiler with a new rear diffuser and fascia extensions. It also gets bright tipped dual-exhaust tailpipes and a high-mount spoiler, along with 17-inch wheels.

"The car is the first of its nameplate to receive the Molten Orange tri-coat metallic paint," Ford said.

The Fiesta ST is the work of the Ford's Team RS, the European arm of Ford's Global Performance Vehicles group, and SVT in the U.S.

The base 2014 Ford Fiesta, due out in 2013, is also being shown at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. It will introduce a smaller screen on the MyFord Touch infotainment system and add Sync voice activation that is simpler to use.

Ford says the 2014 Fiesta will offer custom exterior design graphics, "sexy new color options" and the optional 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine.

Edmunds says: The hot new Ford Fiesta ST could be in your driveway before too long.
