FRANKFURT, Germany — The Kia Niro concept, the Korean automaker's compact crossover that targets the Nissan Juke, has been unveiled ahead of the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The concept gets butterfly doors, neon green exterior accents, stainless steel touches and a jumbo infotainment display in the cabin. The concept was teased earlier, but this is the first time its name has been revealed.

Kia has not released any technical specifications about the concept.

"The Kia Niro hints at a possible future B-segment contender," Kia said in a statement on Thursday.

The automaker said the concept has been "created in Europe with European tastes and expectations very much in mind."

Kia earlier had said "there are no current plans for production" and that the crossover "will be used to gauge potential customer response for future showroom models."

The Niro was designed at Kia's Frankfurt design studio under the direction of Gregory Guillaume, its European chief designer.

The concept is set for a formal unveiling on September 10.

Edmunds says: Kia's European design studio clearly had some fun with this concept, inside and out.
