ATLANTA, Georgia — The 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder achieved a new Nurburgring record by lapping the fabled track in less than seven minutes, the automaker announced on Tuesday. The 918 Spyder is making its global debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The record was broken on September 4 when Porsche factory race driver Marc Lieb lapped the 12.8-mile circuit in six minutes and 57 seconds.

The previous record of seven minutes and 11 seconds was set by the Gumpert Apollo Sport in 2009.

The Porsche record is noteworthy because the 918 Spyder becomes the quickest car with global road homologation to lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

"By setting a new Nurburgring record, the 918 sports car is demonstrating both the enormous potential that lies in Porsche's pioneering plug-in hybrid concept and the leading role the company enjoys when it comes to developing sporty hybrid vehicles," said Porsche in a statement.

When Porsche announced the 918 Spyder's technical specifications in May, it predicted that the supercar "has the potential to break many records."

Edmunds says: Kudos to Porsche and the 918 Spyder for taking down this record.
