INGOLSTADT, Germany — Audi is planning to add an exclusive R8 GT Spyder to the top end of its product portfolio in spring 2012.
Sharing mechanicals with the recently announced R8 GT coupe, the drop-top companion seen in these official sketches will break cover in June at Le Mans, ahead of its formal debut in September at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.
The R8 GT Spyder will feature the same 553-horsepower 5.2-liter V10 that powers the R8 GT coupe, driving all four wheels through Audi's R tronic six-speed sequential gearbox. Acceleration from zero to 60 is expected to take around 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 193 mph.
There is no word yet on pricing, although the R8 Spyder in the U.S. carries a $13,500 premium over the hardtop. Audi earlier said the 2012 R8 GT coupe will be priced from $198,050, including a $1,250 shipping charge, when it begins to reach U.S. dealers toward the end of summer.
Edmunds.com says: Audi also hasn't specified production plans, but don't be surprised if the Spyder is limited, like the coupe, to 333 units total worldwide. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
