TORRANCE, California — The 2015 Acura TLX Prototype, a new midsize luxury sedan that replaces the outgoing Acura TL, will debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Acura released no images of the TLX Prototype, which is said to get a sportier look. Specifics such as pricing and technical specifications were not released.

"The 2014 TLX Prototype is designed to appeal to current and next-generation luxury sport sedan buyers, including existing TL and TSX customers," the company said in a statement.

The Acura TSX, one of the smallest and least expensive models in Acura's lineup, will be discontinued in 2014, Acura said.

The production version of the 2015 Acura TLX will launch in the second half of 2014.

It will offer buyers two new "high-performance and highly fuel-efficient direct-injected engines, each mated to an all-new advanced transmission, along with available two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations," the company said.

The TLX prototype was designed in Acura's Los Angeles Design Studio. It will be produced at the Marysville, Ohio auto plant.

The Acura TLX will compete with the 2014 Audi A4/S4, Cadillac CTS and Infiniti Q50.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers who have a soft spot for the TSX may want to hit showrooms before the last ones get snapped up.
