DETROIT — The Ford Atlas Concept, one of the biggest truck debuts at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, previews the 2015 Ford F-150.

Ford said the concept "is the future vision for pickup trucks."

The Atlas Concept takes dead aim at the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, along with the redesigned 2014 Toyota Tundra and 2015 Nissan pickups. The Ford concept also competes with the 2013 Ram 1500, which took home the 2013 North American Truck/Utility of the Year honor on Monday.

The Atlas Concept gets a chiseled grille, wide stance and beefy wheel arches. Ford said it will feature a "next-generation EcoBoost powertrain" that is expected to deliver fuel economy gains of up to 20 percent over larger-displacement engines. Powertrain specifications were not disclosed.

Details include power running boards, active wheel shutters that automatically close at highway speeds to improve aerodynamics, an integrated roof system and hidden extendable ramps.

The cabin gets thin, lightweight seating for extra legroom and "floating" instrument pods.

The Atlas name is derived from Greek mythology. It refers to one of the Titans, who was punished for his part in a revolt against Zeus by being made to support the heavens. The myth is "a popular explanation of why the sky does not fall," according to the Oxford Encyclopedic English Dictionary.

Edmunds says: Another year or so before we see how the Atlas concept carries over to the real F-150.
