The 2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR, which is spun off the Beetle Turbo with Sunroof and Sound, will go on sale in the fall.
Pricing will be announced closer to launch, said Volkswagen of America. Only 3,500 GSR models will be built and more than half of those will be sold in the U.S.
The special model gets the same yellow-and-black livery as its predecessor. The 2014 Beetle GSR — short for Gelb Schwarzer Renner or "Yellow Black Racer" — debuts an uprated version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder TSI engine. The 210-horsepower engine will be fitted to the Jetta GLI and Beetle Turbo during the 2013 model year, boosting their output by 10 hp, noted VW.
Other details on the postmodern Beetle GSR include a rear spoiler, 19-inch "Tornado" aluminum-alloy wheels and black-painted brake calipers. The cabin gets a yellow and black theme with sport seats, a leather sport steering wheel and black floor mats with yellow embroidery.
Edmunds says: If you don't mind a Beetle that looks something like a giant bumblebee, this may be the one for you.
