2014 Beijing Auto Show: 2015 Lexus NX (FAQ)

2014 Beijing Auto Show

What Is It?
2015 Lexus NX

What's New About This Model?
The 2015 Lexus NX is a new compact crossover from the upscale Toyota brand. It slots in below the Lexus RX and is the brand's first entry into the luxury compact crossover segment. It features the first turbocharged engine in the Lexus lineup and is spun off the Lexus LF-NX concept car.
The U.S. market will get the Lexus NX 200t, NX 300h hybrid and the NX 200t F Sport.

When Does It Go on Sale?
Specific launch timing for the U.S. was not announced, but the Lexus NX is expected to arrive at dealerships in the fall.

How Much Does It Cost?
No official pricing has been released yet, but it is expected to be priced around $30,000.

What Kinds of Engines and Transmissions Does It Have?
Full powertrain specifications were not released, but Lexus did announce that the 2015 Lexus NX will be available with two powertrains in the U.S.: an all-new 2.0-liter gasoline turbocharged engine in the NX 200t and a hybrid powertrain in the NX 300h.

Transmission details were not released.

EPA fuel-economy numbers were not released.

What Unique Features Does It Offer?
The NX offers an optional Lexus-first wireless charging tray to enable a mobile phone to be charged. Other options include the first use of a new Lexus Remote Touch Interface with a touchpad; a Multi-Information Display with a Lexus first G sensor and boost meter; head-up display and dynamic radar cruise control.

What Models Will It Compete Against?
Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class: A real battle will be waged between the NX and the GLA-Class. With the Mercedes you get sharp styling and quality in a versatile hatchback-style configuration, along with a powerful, fuel-efficient turbo engine. There's also an available AMG performance model that butts heads with the NX 200t F Sport. The 2015 GLA-Class will arrive in U.S. showrooms in fall 2014.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque: This neat little package offers style and efficiency as Land Rover lures in female buyers and amps up its green credentials at the same time. The potent turborcharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the Range Rover Evoque returns 30 mpg on the highway, a number the NX will have to meet or beat.

Audi Q3: Another new contender in the luxury compact crossover segment is the upcoming Q3, which will be the German automaker's least expensive SUV when it goes on sale this fall. A starting price of around $30,000 is expected, which should make for an interesting three-way fight between the NX, Q3 and GLA-Class.

Should You Wait for It?
If the Lexus RX has been a bit too pricey and big for you, the NX may be just right. But shoppers who can stall a decision for several months may want to wait and test-drive the NX against the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class just to be sure.

Looks to be a viable competitor in the segment. I'd consider one if I were in the luxury small crossover market and had that kind of mula.

Is this based on the RAV4 because it certainly has a strong resemblance.

Angry insect mandibles all across the Lexus line = not for me...

  • I am thinking that the closest, most direct competitor would be the Acura RDX even though it is not mentioned in the article.

  • We shall see about at a $30K starting price for a Lexus? If you define "starting price" I wonder what's included for $30K-Lexus (i.e FWD, not AWD) A fully optioned RAV4-limited AWD is $30K and comes only with one engine option a 4 cyl.
