Overview
The XC60 is the middle child in Volvo's gas-powered SUV lineup. It slots between the smaller XC40 and the larger three-row XC90. The five-passenger luxury SUV is a solid alternative to its German and Japanese rivals. Although it has gone several years without a redesign, the XC60 remains competitive thanks to several updates over the years. A T8 AWD plug-in hybrid model offering an all-electric driving range and more power is available. For an Edmunds Expert Rating and more information on the T8 model, select "Plug-in Hybrid" in the dropdown menu in the Pricing box.
Edmunds spotlight: How good is the XC60?
Most of the XC60's rivals have been redesigned since the current generation launched in 2018, but the Volvo shouldn't be overlooked. It's still a compelling luxury SUV thanks to a long list of standard and available safety features, a solid Google-based infotainment system, and a cabin that provides among the most passenger and cargo space in its class. The XC60 is also luxurious, comfortable and well built. The T8 AWD plug-in hybrid model delivers robust power and a competitive electric driving range. On the downside, the XC60's interior is showing its age in a world with ever-growing display screens, and it lacks some of the advanced tech found in newer rivals. We also wish it provided a more engaging driving experience.
Competitors to consider
The XC60 competes in a segment that's packed with top-notch rivals like the BMW X3, which was redesigned for 2025, and the recently overhauled Mercedes-Benz GLC and Lexus RX. The Genesis GV70, which was introduced for 2022, is another excellent alternative. The Acura RDX and Audi Q5 are also showing their age like the XC60, yet they remain worthy competitors. If you're considering electric SUVs, check out the Cadillac Lyriq and the electric version of the GV70 called the Electrified GV70.
Which XC60 does Edmunds recommend?
Although most luxury-SUV shoppers will be happy with the generous list of features from the base Core trim, we recommend opting for the Plus trim for the added advanced driver aids that help make driving easier and safer. Upgrading to the Plus trim adds a 360-degree camera system, the Pilot Assist drive system, and front, rear and side parking sensors.

Volvo XC60 models
The 2025 Volvo XC60 compact luxury SUV is offered in four trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultra and Polestar Engineered.
Two engines are available for the Core, Plus and Ultra trims. The base engine, called B5, is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system (247 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque). The plug-in hybrid version, called the T8 AWD, uses the same engine paired with a hybrid powertrain. The gas/electric combination (455 hp and 523 lb-ft) is aided by an 18.8-kWh battery, which helps the XC60 T8 offer an estimated 35 miles of electric-only range. Both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is standard. The Polestar Engineered is only available with the T8 AWD plug-in hybrid powertrain.

2024 Volvo XC60 B5 Ultimate 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
Bought a beautiful 2024 Volvo XC60 fully loaded. A dream car…. Wait.. I mean nightmare car. Four days after I got it 12 v critical charge alert came in along with engine light. When I called … I was actually told to drive the car the weekend ( knowing that I was taking my family three hours away that very day 😳) Told them NO. I would be coming in immediately. Got the car back Monday … afternoon. Said it needed a system update and total recharge of the battery. Well ….. two weeks later SAME thing once again !!! Actually told me they don’t know what’s wrong 🫤. This is SO disappointing. And from what I’m reading on many threads… this has been going on for a couple years … not new just to my 2024, and yet Volvo still has NO ANSWER. Very VERY unhappy new Volvo owner 😡

2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge T8 Ultimate 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
My only extras are massage seats, climate package and 21" wheels. The fit and finish on the vehicle is great. Handles solidly with a good sense of traction on the road. It takes corners nicely. The steering is more to the luxury feel which is my preference. As for ride I live on a brick street and it handles them smoothly. Very quiet. Great get up and go with the engine! EV range has … been exceeding advertised at 44mpe. Both front and rear seats are EXTREMELY comfortable. The massage seats are superior to my the BMW 530e I traded and almost as good as my previous Nautilus. The Google Info system has been seemless for my needs. The Volvo app functions nicely. The vehicle seat height is at the sweet spot between the low sedan and high large SUVs.
Overall interior materials are highend with the exception of a few panels which are hard plastic, center console sides, glove compartment door, side door pockets and ceiling hand pulls. A vehicle at this price point I think this is subpar. If you can touch it, it should have a quality feel. If safety is a priority then the rear passenger windows should lower all the way down in case you need to climb out in an emergency.
A few features missing in my opinion are power adjustable steering wheel, specific tire pressure display, configurable interior theme lighting, wireless phone charger and wireless CarPlay.
The showroom sales experience at 2 different dealers was low pressure and respectful which could be a nod to Volvo philosophy perhaps.
Overall currently enjoying the vehicle.
So far good after a minor issue

2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge T8 Plus 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
After fixing a loose proximity sensor issue in rear bumper the car has been running fine. The Google auto is really nice. However it needed rebooting the system (holding the button for 10 sec). Other than that the hybrid XC-60 Plug in drives really nice. We did a couple of long trips on it and the ride was very comfortable and relaxing. The plug in is really powerful and quick

2024 Volvo XC60 B5 Plus 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
Overall, I am very pleased with my 2024 XC60 Plus trim. I love the vehicles minimalist design language, especially the interior and its tasteful mixture of high-end materials. It has many nice features that you would expect in a luxury vehicle, but it also notably misses a few - no powered steering wheel adjustment or wireless charging seem like unusual omissions, especially the latter. … Lack of wireless apple car play is also unfortunate. The infotainment system is also fairly basic in functionality and customization, and the app-based approach to everything means lots of menus and sub-menus - although use of Google Assistant helps mitigate this to a degree. The ride quality is a bit rough/firm, especially at highway speeds so I would definitely recommend test driving on more than just side roads. Overall I think most owners will be happy with this vehicle, but it’s not without its shortcomings.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2025 Volvo XC60, so we've included reviews for other years of the XC60 since its last redesign.
