2024 Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Review
Overview

Buyers looking for a comfortable, well-built luxury SUV can turn to established favorites from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Or they can consider the stylish 2024 Volvo XC60, which offers a bit of modern Scandinavian cool relative to its more serious German counterparts. The XC60 seats five in an interior roomier than most rivals, it offers sophisticated safety features, and is the only model in this group to offer a plug-in hybrid version that can cover 35 miles on electricity. It lacks the Benz's cushy ride comfort or the Audi and BMW's athleticism, but the XC60 has a distinct character of its own.
Edmunds spotlight: Plug-in power gives XC60 an edge
Volvo has always cut its own path among European luxury cars. The XC60 is no different, offering a standard gas engine alongside a plug-in hybrid option. Few rivals offer the latter (the Audi Q5 is a notable exception) and it gives the XC60 an edge, although a pricey one that costs more than $11,000 over the base drivetrain. The extra power is enticing, though, and depending on your driving, the premium could pay off. The T8 can also "self-recharge" by using the gas engine to boost battery charge. It's no substitute for plugging in and filling up, but it's a useful feature that can extend electric range. In combined operation, the T8 is rated at 63 miles per gallon equivalent.
Competitors to consider
Buyers have many options for a small luxury SUV, from the agile Audi Q5 and BMW X3 to the stately Mercedes-Benz GLC. The Genesis GV70 offers bold, Bentley-esque style at an un-Bentley price, while the Lexus RX offers timeless elegance and comfort. The Cadillac XT5 flies under the radar but delivers snappy handling and striking design. The only rival to the T8 Recharge is the Audi Q5, although it's rated for less electric range — 23 miles — than the Volvo.
Which XC60 trim does Edmunds recommend?
If your budget allows, we recommend the XC60 Recharge in Plus trim. The plug-in hybrid is more powerful, and more expensive, than its base four-cylinder counterpart. But if you have a short commute or regular routes that can maximize the Recharge's 35 miles of electric-only range, you could recoup the added expense through reduced fuel consumption. But if the bulk of your driving will dip into the gas side of things, we'd suggest sticking with the base B5 engine with the Plus trim. The latter offers improved cabin treatments and extra driver assistance features.

2024 Volvo XC60 models
The 2024 Volvo XC60 compact luxury SUV is offered in four trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate and Polestar Engineered.
Two engines are available for the Core, Plus and Ultimate trims. The base engine, called B5, is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system (247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque). The plug-in hybrid version, called Recharge T8, uses the same engine paired with an electric motor that powers the rear wheels. The gas/electric combination (455 hp and 523 lb-ft) is aided by an 18.8-kWh battery, which helps the XC60 plug-in hybrid offer an estimated 35 miles of electric-only range. Both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is standard. The Polestar Engineered is only available with the Recharge T8 engine.

2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge T8 Ultimate 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
My only extras are massage seats, climate package and 21" wheels. The fit and finish on the vehicle is great. Handles solidly with a good sense of traction on the road. It takes corners nicely. The steering is more to the luxury feel which is my preference. As for ride I live on a brick street and it handles them smoothly. Very quiet. Great get up and go with the engine! EV range has … been exceeding advertised at 44mpe. Both front and rear seats are EXTREMELY comfortable. The massage seats are superior to my the BMW 530e I traded and almost as good as my previous Nautilus. The Google Info system has been seemless for my needs. The Volvo app functions nicely. The vehicle seat height is at the sweet spot between the low sedan and high large SUVs.
Overall interior materials are highend with the exception of a few panels which are hard plastic, center console sides, glove compartment door, side door pockets and ceiling hand pulls. A vehicle at this price point I think this is subpar. If you can touch it, it should have a quality feel. If safety is a priority then the rear passenger windows should lower all the way down in case you need to climb out in an emergency.
A few features missing in my opinion are power adjustable steering wheel, specific tire pressure display, configurable interior theme lighting, wireless phone charger and wireless CarPlay.
The showroom sales experience at 2 different dealers was low pressure and respectful which could be a nod to Volvo philosophy perhaps.
Overall currently enjoying the vehicle.
So far good after a minor issue

2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge T8 Plus 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
After fixing a loose proximity sensor issue in rear bumper the car has been running fine. The Google auto is really nice. However it needed rebooting the system (holding the button for 10 sec). Other than that the hybrid XC-60 Plug in drives really nice. We did a couple of long trips on it and the ride was very comfortable and relaxing. The plug in is really powerful and quick

2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge T8 Plus 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
I've secretly always wanted a Volvo. But when I found out I needed to get a new car, I also didn't like the idea of driving a traditional gasoline-powered car. The plug-in hybrid was an easy choice, and this car has been solid since we brought it home. You don't need a fancy plug (although it helps) and I've used a fraction of the gas I'd normally use. The technology is also top notch, … which was another thing I wanted in a new car.

2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge T8 Plus Dark 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
Should have gone with initial choice of mild hybrid. Very disappointed - getting 15 mpg. Heavy vehicle, drives like a truck, needs brakes when not using gas pedal as accelerates on the slightest incline. So disappointed I got caught up in the 63 miles e, 30 hybrid. Not seeing either!
